So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Staying Positive with Simple Jewelry: Gratitude Bracelets

By Deanna Collins

It's easy to get bogged down in life's problems. When the going gets tough, we always have two options. We can allow circumstances to take away our motivation and defeat us or we can rise to the challenge. A gratitude bracelet is one aid to staying positive, even when the odds seem stacked against us.

Discovering the Importance of Gratitude

It's a fact that there is always somebody worse off then us. That might seem like small consolation when life seems to be going along poorly, but recognizing the blessings that we enjoy is a small but powerful step towards cultivating a positive outlook.

It can be a difficult task to detach oneself in order to objectively view various situations. If you surround yourself with pessimistic attitudes, in the end they can only aggravate the situation instead of improving it. Take for example some sort of depressive illness. Many things can appear to be far worse than they really are. A spiralling decline seems to happen when we allow ourselves to view subsequent issues in our lives in negative terms.

A pessimistic attitude can be appropriate in certain situations. Finding a balance and seeking for ways to keep perceptions and reactions in their rightful place is the key to ensuring misplaced optimism or denial does not evolve into situations as damaging as any negative attitude. The most important focus point regarding our experiences and the counterbalance is as important as gratitude itself.

And Just What Do I Have To Be Grateful For?

A large number of us barely scratch the surface when it comes to recognizing those things we should be grateful for. Many don't realize they are taking these positive things for granted, and sometimes forget to count their blessings. A good way to keep track of these positive aspects of our lives is by keeping a gratitude journal. Simply keeping a daily record of the things in life we should be grateful for, such as friends and family or celebration of a small stroke of luck has been proven to enhance happiness. Once the seeking out of positives in your life has been noted, it can easily amaze you at how many things you actually have to be grateful for.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude with a Gratitude Bracelet

The key to using gratitude as a tool for maintaining a positive attitude is regular reinforcement. Gratitude journals work by reminding ourselves on a daily basis of the good things in our lives. A gratitude bracelet can work in a similar way. Every time you put it on, take it off or look at it during the day, it can remind you of the many reasons you have to be happy - no matter how many you have to be discontented.

Your choice of gratitude bracelet could be dependant on many different ideals. It could be as simple as a general reminder you have many positive things in your life. It can also be as complex as finding one symbolizing some of the many things that enrich your life on a daily basis. You can choose a color that reminds you of your favorite part of nature, or a color that makes you think about that particular look in a loved ones eyes.

With endless possibilities, once the connection is made between the bracelet and all things positive in your life it will be easy to be reminding of these things with a glance or the feel of your gratitude bracelet. If you wish to enrich the life of someone else and give one as a gift their feeling of gratitude will include you, as well as other loved ones. What better gift is there to remind you of all of the world's beauty?

Goa - Land of Plenty

By Ava Mason

Goa is known as the land of beaches but this small sun-kissed, west Indian state has much more to offer visitors.

Most roads in Goa are little more than a tarmac indication of the direction you can travel. They snake along the countryside with nothing more than an arbitrary nod towards modern engineering and road construction. Around blind corners, cows - exploiting their sacred status - wander across the road regardless of traffic, earning them the nickname from locals of "Goan Traffic Police". In its own way the road system works - allowing day-to-day work and travel with minimum fuss and maximum noise.

There is nowhere on earth quite as intriguing as India and few places on the sub-continent offer such an eclectic mix of colour and atmosphere as Goa. Perched on the west coast of India, with long sandy beaches down to the Arabian Sea, Goa has become India's land of plenty. Migrant workers seeking employment, Nepalese and Kashmiris selling ethnic goods to tourists and wealthier Indians buying second homes boost its population to nearly one and a half million.

A Colonial Past... A Portuguese colony until 1961, Goa has shaken off most of its European past, but a few colonial gems still remain. For the last few years in particular, Goa has been known as the land of wealthy with tourism firmly established. Visit a Goan beach resort and youll find a fascinating array of stalls and traders selling everything from ethnic jewellery to tacky souvenirs.

For most visitors to Goa, the main attractions are the bars and beaches - and they are superb " as well as the hunt for that elusive bargain souvenir. The Goan or Nepalese traders have years of experience of what "special price" really means. They have another quality - patience. Their stalls are set up with meticulous precision as part of an ordered daily ritual.

Spirited nightlife and tranquil hideaways... Goa offers everything from hedonistic moonlit beach parties to tranquil restaurants by the beach. Baga in the north is Goa's largest resort and the liveliest. Palolem is a tranquil haven with a picture postcard beach. Old Goa, the state's original capital, is an atmospheric town where you can take a day exploring the colonial villas and grand churches of its colonial heritage.

Life's a beach... Goa's fabulous beaches are its lifeblood. In early evening they come alive with activity as the local traders set up their stalls. Take a moment to enjoy the legendary Goan sunset and relax as the sun slips into the sparkling Arabian sea.

A glorious mix of Indian culture and European influences makes Goa a unique holiday destination. Set foot on its shores and you wont be disappointed.

How to Grow Pumpkins

By Rachel Caine

Potatoes are not a crop for most home gardeners to grow in large quantities - but young potatoes, an inch or two across, have a special flavor and are worth growing. Most varieties have brown skins, but some have reddish or bluish skins. The flesh of potatoes is usually white or cream-colored.

Each block should weigh 1 to 2 ounces and contain one to three eyes. Spread the pieces out in a single layer in a well- ventilated and well-lighted place for four or five days before planting. To minimize loss from rot, dust the pieces with captan.

Prepare the soil by digging a flat-bottomed furrow 6 to 8 inches wide and 3 to 4 inches deep; for more than one row, space the furrows 21/2 to 3 feet apart. Scatter 5-10-5 fertilizer along the bottom of the furrow at the rate of 21/2. pounds to 25 feet of row; mix the fertilizer with the soil. Plant the pieces of potato in the furrow, eyes up, at 12- to 15-inch intervals, and cover them with 3 inches of soil. Potatoes form close to the surface of the soil and are easily damaged by cultivation.

Put into each hole a bushel of compost or well-rotted cow manure, then return the soil, forming a mound about 4 inches high. Plant four to six seeds 1 inch deep in a circle on top of each hill. When seedlings appear, cut off all but one or two of the strongest plants.

From late summer on, remove any blossoms or new fruit to channel the plants' energies toward the fruit that have already formed. For a huge exhibition pumpkin, allow one fruit to develop on each vine, and water heavily. To train vine varieties to grow upward, follow the directions on page 30. To grow pumpkins with corn, sow single seeds every 10 feet or so in the rows of corn.

Potatoes are grown from pieces of seed potatoes, which are specially developed for planting; be sure to buy those labeled "certified" - they are relatively free of diseases and often produce double the crop obtainable with noncertified potatoes. Do not plant potatoes bought at a food store - they may have been shipped in from another part of the country and may not grow well where you live. They may also have been treated with a chemical that inhibits sprouting and will prevent them from growing.

Sharpen Your Knives with a Reliable Tool

By Moses Harun

There are many pieces of a knife set that can be enjoyed, including the different types of knives that come with the set and storage unit. One of the better extras that is included in many different sets is the sharpener. Many sets will feature sharpeners that are part of the storage area for the knives. A knife set sharpener can form a great addition to any set.

A sharpener is intended to be used to keep the knife blades both sharp and strong. With time, use of the knives can cause the blades to turn weak and dull. As a result, it will be harder to properly take care of the items that must be chopped. While the knives need to be used, it is crucial to know that if they are dull it will be difficult to manage them. You can use your new sharpener on the Wusthof Santoku Knife.

What's more is that while a number of groups say that their blades never require sharpening, this is probably not true for many of these sets. Due to this fact, it will be important to buy a great sharpener for the set.

The sharpener may turn out to be among the components that is most often used. The sharpener can be very easy to use. The sharpener is used as an open area where the knife can slide. The knife can be inserted in the right direction so that it will be easy to get the knife to be properly sharpened. The knife will need to be pulled through the knife sharpener with slow, consistent movements. This is since each of the edges on the knife may be sharpened the right way; in the end, it will be much less difficult to cut food.

Most of the time, the sharpener will turn out to be built into the set itself. This is true when the sharpener is embedded in the storage area for the knives. It will be effortless to in and out of the sharpener because the sharpener that is meant for a particular knife set will, of course, be made to work specifically with the knives that come with that set.

Sometimes, the sharpener can be found packaged with the complete set, but but has not been attached right to the storage area. Along with your new sharpener, you can get the highly recommended Wusthof Santoku Knife.

A knife set sharpener is sure to be one of the best parts of a knife set to use. A sharpener will work to help with getting the knives to be sharp and working nicely. The sharpener may be employed so the knives have the capacity to work properly and that they will be ready for any kitchen needs.

How to Grow Melons

By Peter Nanette

Okra is a warm-weather plant grown for its immature seed pods, which are delicious fried or cooked in soups and stews. The plants grow 3 to 5 feet tall and bear maroon centered pale yellow flowers about 2 inches across.

Melons can be grown successfully in regions where minimum night temperatures average no lower than 55 and minimum daytime temperatures are no lower than 80 throughout the growing seasons. The length of the growing seasons, from the time the seeds are sown until the plants are harvested, is listed for each recommended variety. Because long growing seasons are required for most casaba, Crenshaw, Persian and honeydew melons, all but a few of the varieties that are listed in these categories are generally grown only in the southwestern, south-central and southern parts of the U.S.

Most cantaloupes have orange flesh, but some have lime-green flesh even when ripe. Some excellent varieties are Burpee's Fordhook Gem, green flesh, and Burpee Hybrid, orange flesh, both 82 days; Delicious 51, orange flesh, 86 days; and Mainerock Hybrid, orange flesh, 75 days. Two hills of cantaloupe yield a harvest of about eight fruit over a period of three weeks.

Casaba, Crenshaw, Persian and honeydew melons are closely related to cantaloupes, but generally ripen later. Excellent varieties for warm regions are Golden Beauty Casaba, white flesh, 120 days: Honey Dew, white flesh, 110 days; and Persian, orange flesh, 120 days.

Three good varieties that succeed in shorter growing seasons are Burpee's Early Hybrid Crenshaw, pink flesh, 90 days; Honey Mist, green flesh, 92 days; and Sungold Casaba, white flesh, 85 days. Two hills planted with these types yield six fruit over a period of four weeks.

Cantaloupes should be picked at what is called the "slip" stage, when a slight pressure at the point where the stem joins the melon causes the melon to slip off the vine. All other melons are still firmly attached to their vines at harvesttime, so other yardsticks must be used: casaba and honeydew melons are ripe when the skin turns yellow; Crenshaw and Persian melons when they develop a fruity scent; watermelons when a rap on the fruit creates a dull rather than a sharp sound. Fruits that start to grow after midsummer will not have time to mature and should be removed; this thinning will direct nourishment toward fruits that are developing. Unused melon seeds keep for about five years.
