Although it was released in 2006 the Garmin Forerunner 305 is one of the best selling wrist mounted GPS devices on the market.
If you haven't been paying attention lately I'll get you up to speed. The latest trend in outdoor athletic training involves using GPS technology to add location information to the usual spread of training measurements like heart rate and time. The numerous new ways that this technology allows athletes to monitor this progress is too much to mention here but you should know that it literally adds a whole new dimension to training.
This kind of training has only been made possible by recent advances in GPS technology. The first wrist mounted GPS units to hit the market looked like something out of Battlestar Gallactica that very few athletes would be caught dead wearing. It was the best and brightest at Garmin who developed the first wrist mounted GPS unit that athletes actually considered using; the Garmin Forerunner 305. They've since released a newer version (the 405) but it hasn't caught on as well as the 305.
Amazon.com, ranked the #1 Consumer Electronics Website by Keynote Competitive Research, lists the Garmin Forerunner 305 as a best-seller in its' Electronics category. It's easy to see why Amazon.com has a hard time keeping the Forerunner 305 in stock when you read some of the customer reviews of the product. Outdoor athletes rate the product as a "4.5 out of 5 stars" in 667 reviews. Most reviews start with shining titles like:
"Great Tool"
"Awesome!"
"The Garmin 305 Rocks!"
Here's what outdoor athletes love about the Garmin Forerunner 305:
1. large, high resolution, customizable display
2. it grabs satellites quickly
3. large, clearly marked buttons
Okay, I know, the 4 minute mile was broken without any of this fancy technology, but if Roger Bannister has access to the Garmin Forerunner 305 I am sure he would have used it!
