This Christmas Parents will be looking for cheaper ways to enjoy the holidays with their kids. It is pretty evident that many families this holiday season will have to cut back or change the priorities of their spending this year in order to meet the everyday needs of running their households. However, this does not have to mean the diminishment of their Christmas. It can be used as an opportunity to find new ways for the family to connect and create wonderful and more meaningful family traditions that can endure good times and bad and be a source of good cheer each and every year. Here are some innovative and simple ideas for activities a family can do this Christmas.
Arts? and Crafts. This is more like an old idea being made new. There was a time when just about every decoration and gift for Christmas was homemade. However recent years has caused most families to rely on purchasing most of what they need for the holidays. Taking part in making homemade decorations, can be an opportunity to make great memories in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It also is an opportunity to make time where all family members come together to spend quality time with each other. There are numerous arts and crafts that can be made with instructions from books or the internet and many of them will look just as good or even better than their store bought counterparts. Some great examples are make holiday stockings, tree ornaments, or stand alone holiday decorations that can be placed in prominent places in the home.
Games are a great way to get everyone excited and involved during the holidays. All it takes is a game that everyone enjoys and making Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the special times that are designated for playing them. This is a common occurrence in my household. Our games are Monopoly and recently Wii Sports Bowling. As our family has gotten older kids and parents alike have several responsibilities that make it often inconvenient to play games like Monopoly that take time to play. So we ended up designating holidays as a time when we can all slow down and enjoy a great time together. This makes playing games all the more likely to be a special holiday memory.
Get your children and family members more involved in the older Christmas traditions. This means like organizing for the family to go Caroling or going to a Christmas day service. It also means other fun activities like building Snowmen and forts if you have a White Christmas or just making old fashioned holiday foods with the help of everyone and having a Christmas dinner. Each of these are well tested traditions that have withstood the centuries and will likely continue in one form or another for years to come.
Finally, do something to get your young kids believing in Santa. Normally this would mean that Dad or Grandpa would were a Santa suit. However in this day and age kids are much more suspicious and inquisitive. So to stem the accusations you need to give yourselves plausible deniability. A great way to do this is by ordering a personalized call from Santa. This is great because while your kids are talking to Santa you will be right there with them. The perfect Santa Solution.
