The book "Instead of Roses and Rings" is an extraordinary story of love and healing, a refreshing anodyne to the modern worlds emphasis on smut. This is a tale about two gay men, yes, but also far more then that - it is a tale of love, of tenderness, and shows that love is the same no matter who loves who.
Alexis is haunted by Chris from the moment they set eyes on each other. Tempted by the intriguing mysteries surrounding him, Alexis also finds something to fear in the uncanny resemblance between Chris and an old flame - a previous lover who died long before these two were ever introduced.
Unaware of Alexis' inner turmoil, Chris has his own problems. Struggling with his new lifestyle, and trying to come to terms with his sexuality, he suffers from the lack of anyone to share his fears with. More, he adores Alexis, with an unselfconscious, fiery passion, that very nearly leads them both to disaster, only to save them in the end.
Struggling both with the past and the present, these two men strive to handle their feelings while maintaining the composure that society expects. Aided by a cast of helpful and good-natured friends, while enemies seem to threaten them from every shadow, they must work to overcome their misunderstandings and realize their love for one another. From opposite ends of the same world, the difficulties they face seem at time insurmountable - and yet with steadfast love, they are able to overcome all the obstacles keeping them apart.
I would be remiss as a reviewer if I did not mention the myriad of grammatical errors in this book. Sentences were occasionally missing entire words or used the wrong word (i.e. hear instead of here) and the author's use of incorrect punctuation brought down the quality of my journey in this tale as a reader.
That said, there was one element that was very well done - the vivid dream sequences were very unusually written, featuring a stream of consciousness mode of writing that conveyed well the overall dream-like experience, as well as clearly differentiating it from the rest of the text.
