A few months ago Bridgestone have been carrying out their yearly tyre survey by randomly checking vehicles around the globe for their overall condition, the depth of the tread and the inflation pressure. In a supermarket in South Africa the Bridgestone experts checked around 968 tyres across 242 autos with interesting results.
All vehicles checked were left with a detailed tyre report to guide drivers of the condition of their tyres. These annual tests according to Bridgestone are showing a general trend toward better inflation pressures as awareness grows about tyre pressure issues. This year's survey discovered that 9% of tyres were over or under inflated with 4% of tyres defined as either dangerously over or under inflated with a further 5% revealed to be very dangerous. This gave an overall result of 91% of tyres found to be correctly inflated which is one the most satisfactory results since Bridgestone started carrying out these annual tests 5 years ago.
Unfortunately the results concerning the tyre condition weren't as inspiring and highlight that further awareness is still required to tackle this problem. The survey from Bridgestone proved that 5% of the tyres checked were below the 1.6mm legal limit or damaged making them dangerous. According to Bridgestone in the prior 2 years this percentage was a lot lower with figures of 1.5% and 3.3% so this is a serious increase.
With the current economic situation many motorists are suffering financially, but risking unsafe tyres on your automobile is not the answer. Badly worn tyres can be deadly in torrential rain significantly increasing the possibility of high speed aquaplaning.
Bridgestone also suggested motorists to keep an eye out for cuts or bulges on their tyres as this can lead to dangerous blowouts. Overall these results report a troubling trend during the past few years that more people are taking possible risks with their tyres to save cash. All motorists are encouraged to look at their tyres regularly and not delay replacing badly worn or damaged tyres to save cash as they are the only thing keeping your safely on the road.
