According to reports, the Chrysler Group will add 1,100 workers as part of a brand new third shift at the Jefferson North assembly factory. The bolstered labor force should enable the automaker to reach its creation goals with the brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee and keep the Chrysler name on top of the heap with regards to innovation, noted Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne.
"Detroit long has been home to renowned innovators and craftsmen," Marchionne said. "So it is in the Motor City, home of our industrial heritage and a resilient people, that we are entrusting the manufacture not only of the ultimate American sports car, the SRT Viper, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee - the most awarded SUV ever - but also a diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee for North American markets."
With 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque in a V6 turbo diesel motor, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is going to provide a clean-burning diesel motor and a ton of power. The European version of the vehicle was able to get 28.3 mpg, although official fuel economy numbers have not been released yet. The Durango sold 51,697 models in its first year on the U.S. market while the Grand Cherokee sales were up last year to 127,744 models in the States.
