Italian automaker Fiat would like to put a coffee producer in its 2013 500L model. The idea is meeting resistance in the United States, for fear of causing distracted driving. But it could save a bundle on morning Starbucks runs.
Espresso manufacturer in Fiat
Starting this fall, people can ask for the coffee manufacturer in their car if they get the Fiat 500L crossover SUV sold in Europe. As the "Starbucks of Italy," Lavazza has supported the project, according to CNN. The espresso producer will be a Lavazza brand made specifically to work in automobiles.
Fiat said in a press release:
The 500L is the first standard-production car in the world to offer a true espresso coffee machine that utilizes the technology of the 'A Modo Mio' pods. It is perfectly integrated in the car with a deck designed expressly by Fiat."
Debate started
There is a ton of debate over whether or not the machine is really secure to use, mostly in America. As soon as the announcement got to the U.S., debates started on Twitter about whether or not it makes it harder to drive.
Only functions in park
The business assures consumers that the espresso maker is really secure and only works when the car is in park. The criticisms have all been considered already, and it is all quite safe.
CNN spoke with Normal Winkler, the Fiat Communications press officer. He said:
"You can use it only when the car is stopped. It's quite tiny and it has a docking station in which it remains locked. The quantity of coffee is much (smaller) than usual use in the cups in the states. Its espresso, it's very tiny."
Could get to America
Fiat has not decided yet if it will consist of the option in the U.S. version of the 500L when it finally reaches American shores. The hesitancy of the decision may well be due to the distracted driving controversy, which appears to be a more touchy topic stateside than in Europe.
Winkler said:
"We have not provided any product details at this time. As we get closer to our own launch of the vehicle we'll provide feature availability and specs and more contexts between the Euro cousin and the U.S. model."
