The recent Ford Fusion and Ford Escape recall involving a cooling system problem that can lead to engine fire could be chalked up to a software problem, said the Ford Motors The software accountable for monitoring the automobile cooling systems could not handle sudden lack of pressure situations correctly, which could lead to fires while the engine is operating, notes Automotive News.
Cooling system troubled
Due to a cooling system software problem, 90,000 Ford Escape and Fusion vehicles were recalled on Nov 30. The fooling systems could not handle pressure losses in some situations, though the design flaw was not fixed, according to a software glitch. Ford will update the software in Fusions and Escapes soon though. Only models with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine are affected.
"The software updates will better manage engine temperatures during a unique overheating condition that could occur under unique operating conditions," a written statement produced by Ford indicated.
In 2013, the Escape and Fusion are the most significant launches for Ford, but the 2013 Ford Escape has been recalled four times since July. The 1.6-liter turbocharged engine was the issue in two of the recalls.
Cooling system software repair won't hurt Ford's bottom line
Logic and appearances would suggest that Ford would lose cash on the cooling system software update. However, technical representatives have announced that company finances will not be impacted by the update.
"It will have no material impact," said Raj Nair, Ford's product development chief. "It's covered by what we have in the warranty reserves."
Fires in nine reported
There have been at least nine motor fires documented in the 2013 Ford Escape and Ford Fusion vehicles. The cooling system problem will be fixed, but drivers are not intended to drive the car until then. In fact, they can call their local dealership to get a rental until the software is fixed. The recall will not take too long.
"When a potential issue is identified, we act promptly on behalf of our customers, as we did this time," said Nair via a written statement.
