So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Casting Organic Aside for Local Vegetables

By Rob Sutter

When looking at the two names side by side, I'm sure you're curious as to what differences there are between organic vegetables and local vegetables. In theory, both of them seem to be homegrown and without any pesticides to speak of, so what does it matter which one you choose? Well, people may not know that there is a distinction between the two categories and it's the reason they need to choose. Buying such products locally certainly has its advantages.

Companies along the lines of Colle Farmers Market would choose both of these because they still are better compared to the normal veggies you'd encounter at a big-time supermarket. Local vegetables are better than organic, though mostly in the area of freshness. As spoke of in National Geographic, organic products may be healthier but the truth is that their freshness is considered due to their mobility around the world. Also, you have to look into the economy in terms of these vegetables.

The article also went on to say that many people would actually support local farmers once the opportunity presented itself. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association came to the conclusion, thanks to a survey, that half of the respondents would do their business locally to support then. A third would support the economy in that area as well. The money that is earned goes directly to farmers as well, which only keeps up morale and boosts business in the long run.

Where organic foods may have an edge over locally grown produce, though, is in the field of healthiness. Organic products are not tainted by synthetic chemicals. The only ways that farmers clean their produce for consumption is through insects made for that purpose, crop rotation, and other natural means. Pests are controlled without any manmade substances and, as a result, are that much healthier to eat so the conflict between these and locally produced food is understandable.

Local vegetables are recommended, of course, but I dare say that organic vegetables are more or less the same. The two variations have a sense of conflict and their benefits might be different, but I want you to incorporate both types. After all, local farmers are able to sell both of these to people, so it makes the most sense to support them and their smaller businesses as much as possible. Maybe if more people did, we'd have produce with more worthwhile benefits to speak of.
