So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas

How Woven Labels Become Part Of The Garment

By Claire Bolton

Garments have always been seen not only as luxuries but also as necessities. Thousands of years ago average citizens only had one common outfit that was worn every day. Obviously the rich could afford more. Clothing took a long time to make, and it was not tailored. To possess clothing with personal identification in it was mandatory. Then along came the industrial revolution. It made clothes manufacturing lighting fast. People began to afford extra changes of clothes. This soon brought the need to fix a label into each garment. And this soon brought forth woven labels.

The industrial revolution brought about a creativity that had never been seen. Standard fibers such as cotton, linen, and wool could be woven and knitted into garments. Eventually polyesters and other man made materials would be processed into clothing. Many of these fibers had different properties. Shrinkage, elongation, and moisture content are just a few examples. When coupling this fact with the types of manufacturing processes there could be many variables that could affect the clothes. That meant that they could not be cleaned in the same ways.

Garment labels became necessities so owners would know precisely how to clean and protect their property. This would confirm that an expensive wool sweater worn this winter would not be two sizes smaller the next. As a plus they would also contain size information. This was helpful as department stores increased in popularity. And as a matter of fact, garment stores would not have been as profitable if it were not easy to distinguish between clothing sizes.

A label for garments was a thought after the fact. Clothing was initially the primary focus, and that is understandable. So a garment label would be cheaper in appearance than the actual clothing. Labels could become uncomfortable. They could irritate the neck or any other body part. Often they would be torn out. Garment size and care information could be forever lost.

A screen print label is easy to make as well as inexpensive. The woven types may not as inexpensive as the screen prints, but they surely are not cheap. When customers review garments they are more likely to get better feelings when high quality labels are on them.

A label made through weaving will maintain its shape. And the information they provide will weather the many washings and cleanings. Screen printing can slowly deterioration and become illegible. A woven label attached to well manufactured clothing could become family heirlooms. They could be passed down through multiple generations.

Label designs and information can be created by graphic designers. Virtually any design imaginable can be designed. The designs are saved as files and fed into the modern textile weaving machines. The information can be woven on both sides of the label.

Woven labels continue to make their mark through enhancing clothes. As fashion designers and apparel manufacturers seek to set themselves above others, there will be greater desires to use them more creatively. Whether triangular, rectangular, or square, they will continue adding extra fashion dimensions to clothing.
