There is no accounting for taste when it comes to a guys hobby. Some of the worst smells and messiest places come into being when that guy gets into his latest groove. It does not matter whether that is cooking, collecting things or killing other things. Those hobbies he has selected for himself may not have outward signs of even making sense, however, it is his and that is the way it is.
A collection of the best football or baseball cards might be on his list. They may actually be all over the house, however, it is sill his collection. That collection of beer cans from all of the most eclectic brands imaginable may be his over riding passion. That is the case even if they are not all cleaned out. In either case, comments about them not being worth anything falls on deaf ears.
Many collections do make financial sense, at least as far as future gains are concerned. This would include the coin collection. Those boxes of adult specialty magazines may not have the same things said about them. Competitive eating is not as valuable as other pursuits and the largest ball of string has been done.
Hunting and fishing is something that, at least, gets the guy out of the house for a while. Sometimes, probably more often than not, it is simply a camping trip with guns. The heads being brought back for stuffing, and or the stuffing itself, could be the main part of the exercise.
There are several hobbies that could be tied in with a patriotic or a coming home type appeal. Among them would be the collecting of guns and the building of model trains or airplanes. The guns will be the attempt to preserve the nature of the American culture that is frowned upon today. The transportation models will be a way of looking back to what almost every guy used to play with.
It is not really so much the actual accumulation of stuff that is behind the hobbies men have, it is the fact of the activity. The need for men to be busy, regardless of what that activity is. Is the overriding drive for most of the hobbies, themselves. Many of them do have a purpose even if that purpose is not something that can be articulated.
Hobbies such as playing with kids will only last so long. Working with their eyes on the fine detail involved in building a ship in a bottle will go away once the eyes start to. Sky diving, base jumping and extreme sports are not a life time pursuit and every one of the hobbies guys have will come to an end one day.
All of these guys hobby ideas they have now means they are still living life. If they decide their new hobby is blowing people up or becoming a mugger on the streets at night, worry and talk them out of it. They know that the hobbies they have are not necessarily on the top of your most favorite things. All they really want is tolerance and an occasional sandwich or cup of coffee when they are busy.
