Are Cool Trendy Baby Girl Clothes Practical?

Doesn't it sometimes seem as if cute trendy baby girl clothes are the only things you can find for your daughter or niece or your friend's little girl these days? Take a look around the baby clothes part of the next store you go into and see if you agree. But isn't price or practicality even more important a lot of the time?

And it doesn't seem as if the idea of practicality carries much weight even with the rich and famous in this world: check out the recent visit of Suri Cruise when she went to spend a day with Posh Spice's boys - I love to see little girls in pretty dresses with matching accessories but it surely doesn't fit the bill for a boys "play day"!

Some years ago I owned and ran a preschool that included an outdoor play area which meant that the children could enjoy physical activities and let off a bit of steam from time to time. But this was inhibited by the type of clothes that many of the girls wore for playschool, despite my pleas to the parents. Climbing frames and bikes were frequently a risk which lead to restrictions for girls with unsuitable shoes and long dresses.

There were many ways in which I saw accidents occur: a long dress or skirt would be trapped in a bike wheel and result in a fall. Other children found it difficult to avoid treading on long skirts or dresses. A girl's enjoyment of the slide soon came to an end if her dress became entangled with part of the slide and caused an accident.

But it goes far beyond preschool. Even if they are not quite so fancy or fashionable, unisex clothing such as shorts or pants are far more suitable for that trip to the park or the fairground inflatable ride or even your Disney World exploration. All of these include physical activities such as running, jumping and climbing - and in this age of equality, doesn't everyone agree that girls get just as much out of this type of fun as boys do?

And isn't that gorgeous pretty dress that is your daughter's favorite really only suitable for special and calm occasions? If she does play out in the yard and rips it, she is likely to become really upset. Or if she is playing at home or at playschool and ruins it with paint or glue, what a disaster that will be.

When I ran a preschool I always advised moms (and dads!) to put their children in practical, inexpensive clothes so that their kids could enjoy all the activities without worrying about their clothes getting dirty or spoiled. Little girls should be able to enjoy the physical aspects of play with the same sense of freedom and adventure as little boys.

So buy her some outfits that are less costly and a lot more practical in addition to the cool trendy baby girl clothes you like the best. Save the cute kids clothes for parties and other less strenuous activities when you know they are the most appropriate.

February also is the month to do some serious planning of the garden for the coming season instead of waiting until you have the seeds or plants in hand ready to be planted in spring. Garden planning should be done on paper after a list of the plants you prefer has been compiled. Quadruled paper which may be secured from office supply stores or artists supply shops is a great aid in making planning on paper easy because the lines give you an exact scale with which to work, use the eight or ten scale ruled paper.

Give an index or key number or letter for each of the plants you want to grow. Then on the basis of their size and form, color and texture of both foliage and flowers, develop a plan on the paper.

You will be amazed at how simple planning can be and how superior results are over the hit-or-miss, spur of the moment type of planning which is so commonly done a few minutes before planting.

Study the aesthetic qualities of the plants of your choice and use these qualities the way an artist uses pigments, pencil and brush in drawings and paintings. After all, a garden is a living picture and should consist of plants that produce an interesting, exciting and beautiful effect.

There should be harmony in the colors, textures and the forms of plants. The plan also will give you a more accurate estimate of the number of plants needed. Proper spacing can be determined on paper, then reproduced in the garden bed at planting time.

Dont waste those precious early spring hours in buying seeds and supplies when you can use that time in your garden. Garden stores now are stocked with everything and anything you need.

This may not be the case if you postpone making purchases too late in the spring. Also the clerks will have more time to serve you, to give you ideas, to chat with you about new developments, new chemicals, new tools.

There will be time to discuss fertilizers, soil conditioners, new varieties of plants. Later on when the spring rush is on there will not be time for pleasant and profitable discussions concerning plants, their characteristics, their culture.
