So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Prep Your Home for Trick-or-Treating

By Andy Kongsri

Here are 5 suggestions for making your home ready for Trick or Treating this Halloween

1. Because people will be coming to your front door for their Halloween treats, it is a good idea to make your home as welcoming as you can, and as safe as possible. A good idea is to make sure your porch light is on during the trick or treating hours. This enables others to feel welcome to come to your home, and the light on will create a feeling of being safe.

2. Your decorations need to be organised. People are much more likely to visit homes that are decorated for Halloween, showing that the people in the home, are having as much fun as those out trick or treating. Elaborate and expensive decorations are not necessary. Your home can look and feel creepy simply by having some well positioned pumpkins, and maybe some other simple but spooky additions.

3. Are you someone who has pets in your home? Dogs in particular should be kept out of reach of the entrance used by those trick or treating, no matter how well the animal relates to children normally. Some dogs may get spooked by some of the costumes that will be appearing at the door, so there is no guarantee that your pet will act as normally as they usually do.

4. Having a great big candy bowl is something that you will be needing. Most trick or treaters will keeping an eye out for that candy bowl, so don't overlook the importance of the bowl. Even if you donĂ¢€™t intend being home, you can still prepare a big candy bowl. Erecting a sign that welcomes people to help themselves to your candy is one way of letting people know.

5. Always ensure that you have a safe path to lead people to your door, and this means no toys lying around, or garden hoses across the path. Sprinklers are something that should be shut off during the trick or treating period. Getting people wet in the cold of night could see some getting sick. If you can light up your pathway that helps with safety as well.

The Delicate Way of Getting A Stain Out Of Your Quilt - Part 2

By Jane Green

In the last article, we looked at what to do when marking happens and the way to treat oil and grease based stains.

Continuing on from there we will now look at the next most common kind of stain that happens on quilts:

Protein Stains

Believe it or not, this is a large one. Many people are stunned to discover just how many protein based stains there can be. Things like mustard, blood, fruit juice, mud, vomit, wine, coffee, chocolate and coca are all protein based stains.

The guideline is, if it came from a human or something humans eat, chances are its a protein stain.

The best way to remove a protein stain is to get rid of as much of it as practicable by blotting with cloth or paper towels to remove excess fluids or materials. Then mix up some cold water and salt using the ratio of 1 tsp of salt to 1 pint of water.

I cannot stress the importance of cold water enough. Do not use hot water! Hot water will react with the protein and lock in the stain.

For tea or coffee, use borax and water or if you have it on hand, Club Soda works a treat as well , this one actually helped me when I spilled coffee on my favouirte patchwork quilt. For wine and fruit juices, you will need an ammonia based cleaner to get rid of all of the staining.

If the stain does not come out right away, you will need to soak the stained areas for a few hours before putting it through a regular wash.

Permanent Marks

This is an assorted bag. There are so many differing types of chemicals and every one has an individual way of treating it. The good news is that most chemicals will have cleaning instructions on the back of the packing advising how to treat it if marking happens, so consult the packets.

Tar and asphalt are also impossible to get out as this tends to lock into the fibres themselves and cannot be melted or scrubbed out.

There are some things which can't be removed. Stuff like scorch or burn marks will not wash out as these are significant changes in the fibre composition itself, not the colouring.

Hopefully this guide has given you one or two good ideas and helps you to get out any annoying or difficult stains.

Sashiko, A Rose Quilt Pattern Might Not Have Heard Of

By Jane Green

If you have not heard about "Sashiko" before, do not feel bad, its not the most typical of quilt designs out there. While there is a solid following, not everyone has a Sashiko quilt.

To give you a bit of a background, Sashiko is a style that originated in Japan decades ago when cotton and fabric was still extremely expensive. With Sashiko literally translating into "little stabs" it had been a style that was used to mend tears and worn out bits of cloth and making it look nice, while avoiding having to get new material or make a new quilt.

It can be both a pattern and stiched image and is sometimes used for patchwork quilts, which has helped it gather strong support in some quilting circles.

While its historically done by hand, it is wholly feasible to now get specialised Sashiko sewing machines. There's a fair chance that you may not own or know someone who has one, so it could be better to hire the services of someone that does.

There are several patterns available, almost all of which feature a variety of japanese flowers. One pattern in particular which is a 'plum blossom ' already looks most of the way to a rose and with a little revision, would make a stunning rose quilt design.

If you wish to start with nothing, you can always use some of the other patterns as a guiding principle for styles and designs for your rose themed pattern.

If you are not the sort to stitch by hand, you will find that select stores will offer a range of Sashiko designs and patterned material, ready for you to work into a quilt design.

So if you're trying to find a different approach to a rose quilt, rather than the same old traditional design, have a look at some Sashiko designs. You may be pleasantly surprised.

What Quilting Accessories Can't I Live Without?

By Jane Green

Every quilter has their 'must have' tools, their iron, their scissors, rulers and such. However for me it doesn't just stop there.

Over my years of quilting, I have also come across several cute accessories and tools that would simply make quilting so much harder without them. The funny part is they aren't even huge things, just tiny things here and there that save me a few minutes at a time.

Chaco Liners

Chaco liners look a lot like permanent markers, however they are quite different. Instead of permanently marking your fabric, these liners have a powder type tip that is intended to leave a mark, though not permanently.

The basic idea behind these is that you can mark out the measurements as needed and then when its no longer needed, clean it off quickly and easily. Good for anybody working on a custom quilt pattern or patchwork quilt.

They also are refillable, so when you finish one, you can just unscrew the cartridge and swap it for a new one.

Thread Rack

This is a superb simple to use device that has saved me numerous minutes searching for the right thread. This is a rack divided up into a grid. Where each grid meets is a little dowl that sticks out, which you can put a spool of thread on.

I have organized mine in a rainbow color order so I will quickly locate the color thread I need and begin sewing. No more rumaging around your sewing box for the right color spool.

You can get ones that stand vertically and have a roatating base to help you choose your threads, similar to a greeting card rack.

5 in 1 Sliding Gauge

This looks similar to one of those T-squares your teacher used in maths class. The difference is this one has an adjustable slider.

It's a real wonder tool and is perfect for marking out button holes, seam allowances and hem length, just to name a couple!

Its these little things that help me save minutes here and there. These minutes then start turning into hours and shortly you'll find you can't live without them either!

The Beginners Guide To Sewing Machines - Part 2

By Jane Green

What Sort Of Stitching Patterns Do I Need?

There are a couple of stitches that folks new to sewing will require. These are the straight stitch and zig zag stitch

All machines have a straight stitch, its the most popular and most used stitch by just about everyone. So its considered the default.

Most machines will have a zig zag stitch but be sure to check as there are machines out there that do not have this. They are far and few between, but they are still out there, so just be absolutely sure to check it out.

There are two other stitching styles that are handy to have but are not essential. These are button hole stitch and stretch stitch.

Stretch stitch is perfect for for anything that requires a little room to manouver around the seam, so its good for a patchwork quilt which use a bunch of different materials, but it isn't essential.

Don't be too nervous about getting a button hole stitch, a few individuals love this type of stitch, but button holes can be done with a zig zag stitch setting.

Any Other Tips?

Check that the machine can be reversed or is able stitch backwards. This is quite important as some older machines do not do this and its truly handy when you must do this.

Always get the vendor to show in detail, how to thread the machine. Just about every machine has an other way of threading the needle. There's few things worse than having a new machine to play with and having no idea how to start using it.

If you purchase one and forget this step, you could get lucky and find a video that shows you how to do it on YouTube, but this should only be used as a back up solution.

If you are buying a used machine, do not forget to check the electrical cord for signs of fraying and damage. You do not need to get electrified while stitching a quilt!

Keep these tips in mind and you'll be sure to buy a winner!

Making a Quilt? Make Sure Your Materials Are Prepared Perfectly

By Jane Green

Preparing your materials is an important first step whenever you are beginning a new quilt. You wouldn't start a brand new job in mucky clothes, so why should your quilt be any different?

To get your quilt off to the best start, I have listed my pre-flight quilting checklist.

Read Any Instrutions

This is the most vital step before anything else, I learned this the hard way - which I'm going to tell you about later on.

The directions will give you warnings about anything that will damage or affect the materials during the preparation process, so take care you read all the instructions so that you don't get caught out.

Washing

Once you've read the directions, your next stop is to wash the quilt. The directions will tell you whether its safe to put in the machine or whether you should hand wash it, as well as the temperature of water to use.

I was recently working on a green quilt design and did not go over the directions. As it seems, the actual dye they used for this material doesn't handle warm water very well and the colours ran and faded in areas, so be alert and check!

Drying

Drying is one of the things that surprises numerous quilters. Some material does not react well to being put in bright sunlight shortly after washing.

More usually, there are more materials which will get damaged if you put them into a dryer, so take care that you know what you are dealing with.

Ironing

Like drying, ironing is another step in which you can spoil a perfectly good fabric. Materials like silk and polyester will burn or melt if you use an iron that's too hot.

There are too many materials to cover here, so in short if you're in doubt, put your iron on the lowest setting just to be safe.

When you're ironing, start from the center and push your iron out to the sides. Once the material is flat, run your iron over the sides to get rid of any small wrinkles and make it prepared for stitching seams.

If you follow these steps, your material will be prepped and ready to be included in any quilt, eliminating any likely problems with the fabric itself.

Why cotton is the best fabric for bedding

By Charlotte Bedall

What is cotton?

Cotton is produced from the cotton plant's fruits called cotton bolls. The natural fiber has been used for centuries to make many different types of fabric. It's popularity stems from its ability easily blend with other fibers to give it special performance finishes. Cotton can be knit or woven into cloth. The most common weaves are plain and twill. Plain weave produces fabrics like gingham, chambray and percale. Twill weave is stronger and more durable and commonly used for denim, khaki and gabardine. Satin weave is used for high-sheen cottons like sateen.

Fabric Characteristics

Another reason why cotton is so popular is because its is extremely easy to care for and comfortable against the skin. Cotton is always the smart choice for fabrics in hot, humid climates as it 'breathes' well. The cotton fibers absorb the body's moisture and release it on the surface of the fabric where it quickly evaporates. In cold weather, the fibers keep the body warm by retaining body heat. Cotton is also popular among fashion and homeware designers who often dye the fabric into different colors and patterns. Cotton retains color very well and is very easy to dye.

Cotton care is easy and convenient as it can be laundered or dry-cleaned. Cotton can withstand high water temperature so it can be sterilized by boiling. It was often used as baby nappies before disposable diapers were affordable enough to use on a daily basis. Cotton creases and shrinks easily so it is often combined with other fibers and permanent fabric finishes to help reduce the wrinkles and shrinkage. Durable press or permanent press treatment eliminates the creasing and need to iron. It allows clothes to retain pleats and specific creases during normal usage, washing or dry cleaning. Although there are many types of fabrics made from cotton blends, consumers prefer the comfort of 100% cotton.

Laundering & Care

Cotton items are usually laundered in the washing machine. Cotton garments should be frequently washed as they tend to absorb moisture and pick up dirt. White cotton should be washed in hot water, medium colors in warm water and dark colors in cold water. Cotton has the tendency to shrink especially in hot water and fabric that is loosely woven will shrink more than tighter weaves. Garments that have designs embossed or contain lining or shoulder pad should be dry cleaned. Bed linen like quilts & pillowcases that are filled with cotton batting should also be dry cleaned to avoid the batting clumping together.

All these characteristics continue to make cotton the most popular fiber for garments and bed linens. It's versatility, whether alone or blended, outsells all other fibers combined. Current estimates for world production are about 25 million tonnes annually, accounting for 2.5% of the world's arable land. China is the world's largest producer of cotton, but most of this is used domestically. The United States has been the largest exporter for many years followed by India, Brazil, and Australia. One bale of cotton fiber produces 215 pairs of jeans, 249 bed sheets, 409 sport shirts or 313,600 one hundred-dollar bills.

Need an Idea For a Green Quilt? Here's A Couple!

By Jane Green

When thinking about the quilts that I had insane over my many years, whether it was patchwork, themed or patterned, I tried to consider how many green ones I had made... And to my amazement, I could not remember making even one green quilt.

After coming to this awareness, I could find no real reason for not having one and became hell fixed on starting one. I sat down with my pencil and pad and recorded 2 concepts for my green quilt.

Link Theme

I have got a nephew who is very into his Nintendo. One of the games I have seen him play is a game called Zelda : Twilight Princess. The main character of this game is a little fellow called Link.

He dresses mainly in green, with a bit of brown. The graphics on this game were fairly straightforward, with smooth edges and not a lot of detail. Making a quilt with Link in one of the forest theme levels would be quite straightforward and would mainly feature a green design.

On top of this, my nephew would be thrilled to bits with a blanket like this. thigsa and other things oh yeah... things and stuff and more stuff

A Vine Blanket thigns accepting

Taking a nature themed approach, I came up with the idea of using vines to form the pattern of a quilt. You could have them criss-cross or merely grow in random directions across the quilt.

Once you have decided the way in which the vines will go, add some leaves to all of the vines to add some texture to your green quilt. It really makes for a great free form design.

Now I am not going to tell you which idea I ended up going with, but I'm sure that I'm going to at last use all of them, as I love them both! Thing and stuff oh yep baby

The Main Mistake You Can Avoid With Your Next Green Quilt

By Jane Green

Whether you're only starting or have been quilting for years , its always simple to make a screw up. Be it through inexperience, misjudgement or merely a simple slip up, mistakes can and do occur in the quilting world.

This is quite true when you are working on a green quilt design. To assist in avoid making one of the most common slip ups or to help get out of one if you're in it. It doesn't sound like a huge disaster, nevertheless it can ruin your quilt, and that mistake is :

Selecting the wrong shade of Green.

This is one of the simplest mistakes to make - I should know, I have done it twice!

You start off by getting this image in your head, perhaps its a nice emerald green or pea soup green colored quilt. You purchase the material, map it out and get started.

Then somewhere in the middle, you notice that there is something wrong with the color "its too bright, dominates the other colours or just comes out dull. Either way your green quilt is turning into a monster.

Do not give up - this is a simple problem to clear up "all you've got to do it introduce another colour. Most times a burgundy or a white color really helps out.

If the quilt is too bright, I recommend adding a burgundy pattern or design to it, this is going to help darken the appearance of the quilt and bring some depth to it.

If you find the green quilt color is not to your taste, look at stitching another pattern over the top and turn the unattractive green to a fascinating quilt border.

Fundamentally what you are doing is adding another colour and pattern to take away the negative feeling from the green quilt by adding a complimentary color to change the feeling.

So there you have it, what seems at first like a bad mistake can really save your project and turn it into a green quilt you are going to love!
