When learning how to make a patchwork quilt, selecting your fabric can be one of the greatest parts, or the most harrowing. A common phrase that I hear in the patchwork shop where I work is "I'll know what I like when I see it". Considering there are more than twelve thousand bolts of fabric in the store, they might be looking for a a long time.

What I advise is that you ponder it before you go looking to avoid getting overwhelmed. For example, What's your favourite color? Do you like florals? Geometrical designs? Batiks? Plains (like Amish colors or soft colors? This will help to offer you a starting point and the sales helper will be in a position to guide you to the best fabrics for you.

Selecting Fabrics

When you're beginning quilting, I recommend that you begin by choosing a patterned fabric in your favourite color. That way, you will love working on the quilt, and you'll love it for a very long time after it's finished. Then you can select some complementary fabrics to go with it. Perhaps the best way is to select other fabrics in the same Range. Generally manufacturers design a "Range" of coordinating patterns and colours around the same theme, including small and big patterns and one or two colors. If you select your fabrics from the same Range, you know they can all work in together in your quilt.

When choosing fabrics, choose a variety of small, medium and larger prints for contrast. Also remember that depth of colour is important. If you select a mixture of light, medium and dark prints you'll have good contrast and the quilt you have chosen to make will have life e.g. wholly of pale pink, mid sized floral fabrics might be very uninteresting. Add in some deeper shades, maybe some green, and maybe some spots or stripes, and suddenly you have got a quilt that's fascinating.

When you're choosing colors, make sure you "audition" them. Take the bolts off the shelf and test them together, take one away and see if it looks better or worse, put in a darker one, or an accent color. Take away any which don't "go together". The ones that don't match may be because they have got a cream background rather than white, or because it's an orange-red instead of a blue based red.

Fish Has Mercury In It. So Should You Eat Fish?

There are now lots of warnings about the dangers of eating fish. Fish is contaminated with Mercury. Fish is contaminated with PCBs. Fish is contaminated with dioxane.

Given all these warnings you'd be forgiven for thinking that you should never eat fish again. So is eating fish good for you or not?

There's no doubt that fish is good for you. It's packed with Omega 3 essential fatty acids. It's full of protein. It doesn't have any carbohydrates. It doesn't have any saturated fats.

It also has a stack of micronutrients including various minerals such as calcium and also a range of vitams such as vitamin A and vitamin D.

But if you eat fish aren't you going to get those nasty PCBs, dioxane and Mercury along with your protein, micronutrients and Omega 3 fats?

Yes to a small degree you are, however that's not to say you should completely stop eating fish.

The risks of not eating fish would seem to be greater than the risks of eating fish.

If you're worried then there are excellent fish oil supplements available which are not contaminated and which you can take every day, and in fact I recommend that you do so anyway, I certainly do.

But don't swear off fish. Be sensible. It is nutritious, it's yummy and it should be in everyone's diet.

The Patchwork Quilt FAQ

during my years of creating quilts, I've been asked plenty of questions. However , there are a few questions that pop up more frequently than others. I have drawn these together in a simple guide for how to make a patchwork quilt in the event you have a couple of similar questions!

How Do I Start?

This is an incredibly easy one. The very first thing you will need is sufficient scrap material to fill out a quilt. The most simple equipment you will need is a stitching machine, a rotary cutter, ruler that measures both inches and centimetres and a mat to cover the surface you'll be working on.

From there, you must measure out each piece and work out a design. Once you start you may have a tough time stopping!

Can I put a quilt in the washer?

This is not a straightforward one to answer, simply due to the big range of materials that could be used to make an one of these quilts.

Inspect the quilt is there any materials that would not hold up well in a machine? Leather, Vinyl and suede do not work too well in a washer. Also keep an eye peeled for any decorations, studs or pretty bits on the quilt that could come off in the machine.

If it hasn't been washed before, you need to pay attention to one special thing that will occur when it is washed. Once the quilt has been through the machine, the material will shrink slightly, resulting in a tiny bit of puckering and stretching round the stitching.

This is also a good way to test if the quilt has been through the wash before. If it has and it doesn't look worse for wear, you can assume it's going to be ok to go through again.

If in any doubt, its always safer to give it a wash by hand.

Where Can I am getting a Patchwork Quilt Made?

There are a number of places on the Internet that may make you a quilt to order. As I make my own, there aren't any places that I have tried and as such, cannot attest for the quality, however a fast Web search will turn up plenty of places which will do it for you.

My guidance is always check to verify if a mate or relation can do it or know of someone that can. These ones sometimes turn out better.

Two Birds With One Stone – Make A Family Tree Patchwork Quilt

I was skimming through a couple of patchwork quilt patterns recently and nothing was really grabbing my attention. After looking at design after design, I began to ponder about how to make a patchwork quilt that my family would be interested in.

To be truthful, I was battling with ideas on something that everyone would like. With so many sundry interests (and disinterests) it was tough to consider something that everyone wants.

But then I hit on an idea.

When I was doing some ancestry research two weeks ago, I was debating it with some older family members. While discussing the past and who married who, I spotted that virtually all the other family members had an interest in the conversation and were interested in their ancestors.

I went back and performed a little research and mapped out a significant portion of the family tree. I remembered this while contemplating patchwork quilt concepts and thought it would be a great idea if I combined the two!

A square patchwork pattern would form the perfect base to sketch out the family tree. like a grid, I'm able to place the names of all of the families and folks and assign them a square and position, the same way you do on paper.

When I first initally drew up the pattern, I discovered two things.

Firstly , the tree is best done sideways. Every time family members marry, change names and have children, the tree is expanded sideways instead of down.

Secondly, the square sizes I used initially were far too large. After halving the scale of the squares, I found I could fit the whole family history on the quilt and still have enough room in each square to sew the names and link them into the tree.

It isn't quite finished yet, but let me tell you, it's great and I have to hide it from my family. They are all so enthusiastic to see it, they all keep making an attempt to sneak in and take a look at it.

Writing a letter to Santa is a Christmas tradition that children love. It is a great activity to get the family together and spend some quality time together.
