So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Flowers And Foliage - Nature's True Combo

By Thomas Fryd

Flowers from the florist! A gift box is always a delightful surprise and the moment of its opening is fraught with eager anticipation of colorful beauty and cool fragrance. The selected group we buy bespeaks a need fulfilled, either that of decorating for a party or simply satisfying the inner urge to enjoy flowers.

Since, on these occasions, so much pleasure lies before us, why not see to it that the loveliness which flowers add to our surroundings is made to last as long as possible? Too frequently these sometimes sturdy and often weary travelers are simply thrust into vases and never given any further attention until it is time to throw them out.

When I say travelers I mean just that. Many times I handle chrysanthemums from California, gladiolus from Florida or even lilacs from Holland. Arriving at their initial destination, the wholesaler's, they are plunged in water and kept at a cool temperature until bought by the retailer. He in turn may have to hold them several days in his ice box before they are sold, perhaps to you. In this case, cut the stems again immediately and deep soak them in a cool place three or four hours before placing in vases. Over night is often better. This I call "life insurance."

Too frequently the cool, crisp perfection of flowers as they come out of the florists' ice box is lost on contact with the warm, close air of our heated homes. If the stem ends have sealed over and the flowers cannot draw up water, their heads will naturally droop.

The next time you receive gift roses, notice if the stem ends are discolored.

If so, this is a sign that re-cutting is necessary. Roses will be greatly benefited by having their bottom leaves and thorns stripped off as this will also allow greater water absorption. Should they fail to hold up their heads upon arrival, try placing them in water as hot as your hand will stand. If the roses are reasonably fresh this hot water treatment will start the plant juices moving again and through the newly cut stem ends they will start drinking once more. In several hours time they should perk up.

One point to remember is not to be fooled into thinking that packaged formulas will revive limp flowers. They are meant solely for the initial soaking period and if so used are truly beneficial in adding to the life span of roses, carnations and snapdragons.

There are many little things we can do to our florist flowers to make them last longer. Snapdragons, for instance, must always be stripped of their lower leaves. This foliage is "soft" and breaks down quickly under water so that bacterial decay sets in. The water soon becomes discolored and foul smelling. These particular flowers have a very useful tendency to bend up towards the light so that if we buy very stiff straight ones we can coax them into curves by soaking them overnight at an angle.

Methods of Handling

With lilies remember to remove the pollen. Usually the florist does this to prevent the petals from staining. Do the same with the new buds as they open at home. The two hardiest florist flowers, the chrysanthemum and gladiolus, are naturally long lasting and seldom temperamental. Simply re-cut their stems and they are ready to arrange.

Daily care and grooming will pay dividends. Keep the vases full by adding water of room temperature. If containers have wide openings or are of the low, shallow type, it will not be necessary to change the water completely and thus disarrange the grouping. Discolored foliage and withered blooms should, of course, be removed.

If you place a bouquet near a breezy window or on a table beside a hot air radiator, very rapid transpiration will take place and the flowers will never hold up as well as when kept where it is cool and free from drafts.

After tending to the life-span of the flowers, the next step is to display them to the best advantage. All flowers look best when combined with green foliage, for that is the way they grow. Unfortunately, some must be cut without their own foliage. Carnations, gerberas, sweet peas and anemones are among those which arrive in market bare stemmed. Snapdragon foliagea or dracaena fragrans massangeana is neither distinctive nor of good substance and that of chrysanthemums will turn yellow long before the flowers begin to fade.

Knowing this, florists add "greens" to the flowers, using material that is plentiful and inexpensive. Years ago, asparagus fern was commonly used for this purpose. Now it is huckleberry, laurel or lemon leaves. By paying a little more, however, you can buy more interesting and desirable foliage materials, since flower arrangers have been incessant in their demands for them.

Expresso Coffee Is Rich In Flavor

By Lucia Latte

Expresso coffee has been around for a long time but the term that we refer to it by today is relatively new. Expresso coffee is named after espresso the term that originated in Italy to describe individually brewed coffee. Espresso in Italian means brewed for you. There is some popular confusion on what exactly Expresso coffee is.

A popular misconception is that Expresso coffee is different than pother coffee because of the beans that are used. This simply is not true. There are specialty beans that are popular with Expresso coffee but they alone do not make a cup of coffee Expresso coffee.

Other people think that what makes Expresso coffee special is the blend. There are specialty blends that are designed for Expresso coffee but this alone does not make a cup of coffee Expresso coffee. These same blends could be used to make a standard cup of coffee but it would not be Expresso just because these blends have been used.

It's not the bean and it's not the blend so is it the roast? There is common thought that expresso coffee must be a dark roast coffee. While actually the right roast will vary based on the part of the country you are in. For instance on the east coast of the Us people favor a light roast while Californians tend to prefer a dark roast. The standard in Italy is actually a medium roast. What roast is used depends entirely on personal taste.

Generally coffee is about what is in the coffee such as the bean and the blend but this is not the case for Expresso coffee. Expresso coffee is actually all about the way it is brewed. Remember this does not mean that there are not certain blends or beans that are designed for Expresso coffee but rather that the brewing method is the true difference between Expresso coffee and other types of coffee. Expresso coffee is actually not a cup of coffee at all at least not in the traditional sense. Expresso coffee is actually a small shot of coffee that has been brewed from extra fine ground beans and prepared under lots of pressure.

Simply placing the grounds into the machine and pressing the button does not make a cup of Expresso coffee a good Expresso. A good cup of Expresso is more of an art like producing a fine wine. In order to do this properly it the grounds must be ground fresh and then placed in a metal device that resembles a filter and then packing those grounds down with a flat metal surface. Packing the grounds just right is important. The right packing will provide a nice silky like surface to the top of the Expresso coffee. This surface is known as the crema. Good crema is vital to an outstanding cup of Expresso coffee.

Brewing the coffee is not the only thing that makes Expresso coffee unique. The way it is properly drank is also a unique experience. Expresso should be held up to the nose and smelled by taking a large whiff of the aroma of the Expresso coffee. Then the coffee should be drunk in several swallows. Then the cup should be placed back on the serving saucer with vigor.

Some people may look at a drinker funny if they add sugar to expresso coffee but actually this practice is accepted in Italy. However to truly savor the expresso coffee it should be drank straight. This will allow you to truly enjoy the experience the way it is intended.

Guidelines On Proper Rug Placement

By Lola Watchman

I used to go into my apartment rooms, stopped mid-stride and pondered on what seemed to be missing - my living room, den, bedroom and study looked fine to me, but there was something amiss that I couldn't put my fingers on until I went over to a friend's house for her birthday dinner. The realization dawned on me like a real Eureka moment. I was missing the art of rug decoration! Her place looked simple yet so refreshing, in that every room is different from the other - from formal to casual and cheery to artsy. She didn't have to change her wall paint or go crazy with the furnishings. All she had were pretty area rugs of various sizes, designs and colors. I chose to follow her example.

Adorning a living space with a well-chosen rug can have an effect on the room's ambiance and people's impression, including yours. To better utilize a rug as an important decorative material, know some basic information on how to properly position a rug.

Color, patterns and the texture of a rug are subjective issues as they depend on personal taste and preferences. There are no firm rules, but there are ways to place certain rugs to best effect. Smaller rugs can be placed anywhere but since large rugs often define the appearance and style of a room, it is essential to follow some guidelines while placing it.

Now on to rug placement - rugs are usually placed under furniture. The most common are the coffee table, side table and couch. The rule of thumb is to allot some allowance so that all of the furniture will be taken in on the rug. Meaning, no extra leg is in contact with the bare floor. However, in case of a smaller rug (taking into account the budget), you can place the furniture on the center with two or three inches space behind the front legs. Therefore the back legs of the table will reach the bare floor but because of its centered placement maintains a balanced look.

Choosing the right size for your rug is a vital point. Measure your desired space so you'll know which rug has the accurate size. A too big or too small rug will not do. It messes up the whole interior aspect.

Purchase a rug that has eight inches of extra space for the bare floor. You're not looking at wall-to-wall carpeting, so no need to go overtly excited in covering the entire flooring.

For furniture set like the dining table, use bigger size rugs with at least twenty-four inches beyond the edges of the table. This gives space for the chairs so that when people move them back to stand or sit down, the chairs are still included in the rug surface. No left-out drama in your dining room.

A rug sized 4 X 6 feet, 5 X 8 feet, or 5 to 7 feet with a round or hexagonal shape is good for defining a seating area in a large room. Arrange the chairs in such a manner so that you don't have more than two feet of rug behind the chairs.

Pause before you make up your mind about buying a large rug. Think about the size. Will the entrance door have enough clearance? Will the rug hinder any air vents or electric plugs? Make a checklist of all the details that can affect the placement of your rug. Planning ahead is the ONLY way to avoid mistakes. Remember, you cannot cut or modify the structure of the rug and a large rug is a heavy investment. If not placed well, the whole room's appearance can be adversely affected.

Rugs are used everywhere - their unique qualities have made them very popular in homes all over the world. They are available in various colors, sizes and patterns to adorn any room, and if you place your rugs correctly, the beauty of your home will be greatly enhanced.

Stop Foreclosure With Loan Modification

By Ginger Taylor

A mortgage modification, commonly referred to as a home loan modification, enables homeowners to cut down their monthly mortgage payments by re-negotiating the terms of the original loan. This is one of the best alternatives to foreclosure as it allows families in the midst of financial hardship to stay in and keep their home. By setting up a new payment plan through mortgage modification people can avoid foreclosure and lenders still receive payments.

While not all mortgage companies offer this type of program, it is definitely in your best interest to at least ask. Anyone facing the probability of foreclosure needs to do their own due diligence and proactively look for ways to save their home. Understand, lenders do not want your home, they make money by lending money, not by taking homes. If you are in jeopardy of losing your home, you owe it to yourself to discuss choices with your lender.

Bargaining for a home loan modification is often arduous, there is a process. You must qualify for the program and present acceptable documentation. You will be obliged to prove that you can actually pay the new loan. Modifying your mortgage is just one of many options. However, it is one of the most favorable methods of keeping your home from foreclosure.

Some people think that it will cost them nothing to just surrender and step away from their home and let it go into foreclosure. The truth is foreclosure will involve money and will adversely affect your credit. Count the cost. Avoid Foreclosure With A Home Loan Modification.

The loan modification process can be complicated and confusing for many worried homeowners. If you are uncomfortable with negotiating with your lender by yourself or if you want to better understand your choices, contact a loan modification attorney for assistance.

Car History Of The First Gas Powered Cars

By Mick Buick

Some people wonder about car history and how the cars they drive were built and where they originated. An internal combustion engine uses an explosive combustion of fuel to push a piston and then the piston will turn the crankshaft and in turn this makes the wheels turn. The most common fuels used in a car are Gas, diesel and yes even kerosene.

Then sometime around eighteen forty two two men by the names of Thomas Davenport and Robert Davidson built a more successful and practical electric vehicle. Both of these men figured out a way to make the first non-rechargeable electric cells. Around eighteen sixty five a french man named Gaston Plante invented a much better battery which in turn made way for electric vehicles to go much further.

This steam car had to stop every ten or fifteen minutes because it had to build up steam. The steam engine and the boiler that were on this car were places in the front of it. In the year seventeen seventy Cugnot built a remake of his original but this time it held four passengers instead of one.

So in eighteen sixty two a french man named Alphonse Beau de Rochas patented a forty stroke engine, but this engine was never built. Siegfried Marcus built a one cylinder engine with a crude carburetor and made a five hundred foot drive, this was made in eighteen sixty four.

The steam powered cars worked by fuel that burned and heated water in a boiler and this created steam that would expand and push pistons and in turn this made the crankshaft turn, and of course the crankshaft turned the wheels. Cugnot also made a pair of steam engine trains and they never did work very well. Because steam engines were so heavy they were not very good for vehicles because of their weight. Steam engines were very successful in locomotives though. So in turn after all this Historians think that Nicolas Cugnot was the real inventor of the first automobile.

At the turn of the century the electric, gas and steam powered cars were becoming very popular. In eighteen ninety nine and nineteen hundred was when the most cars were bought and they were outsold by all other types of cars. The electric cars were much better than their rival. They were lacking in vibration, smell and noise. This was good because the gas powered car had all of these and most people did not like them.

The thing that most people found most difficult in the gas vehicles was changing gears and the electric vehicles did not require you to change the gears. The steam powered cars also did not require you to change gears manually but they were quite cold natured and on cold mornings you would have to wait around forty five minutes for the car to be drivable.

There is so much history to the steam powered car. It's surprising to know that steam powered stage coaches were made and then at one point banned from the roads. There were a lot of people that tried to invent and improve the steam powered car until finally around the nineteen hundreds electric land vehicles were invented and made the steam powered vehicles obsolete.
