The Achievements Of Indian Motorcycle Company

During 1920 Indian Motorcycle came out with a superb motorcycle which was called Indian Scout motorcycle and was used by everyone from police to motorcycle racer. This motorcycle which was in use till 1939 had a low body and better handling. India was also producing engines for aircraft and motors for boats, air conditioner and cycles throughout World War II.

The Indian Scout was introduced in 1920. It had a 37 cubic inch (596 cc) engine that increased in size to 45 cubic inches (745 cc) in 1927. That increase in engine size was an answer to the popular Excelsior Super X, which was the first American 45 cubic inch motorcycle.

The 101 Scout was the second response which was being produced and some people felt that this was the highest in Indian Motorcycle technology. Another set of fans were pleased to see Indian motorcycle use the body of its other model Chief for the new Scout line which was introduced in 1931.

Perhaps to please Scout devotees, from 1932 until 1941, smaller Scouts were built. They were known as the Scout Pony, the Junior Scout, and the Thirty-Fifty, all of which had 30.50 cubic inch engines.

The early 20th century saw the rise of two giants Indian Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson in USA for motorcycle lovers. The rivalrybetween the companies is well-known and has been printed in a book called The Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars by Allan Girdler. While Scout ruled the world of motorcycles Harley-Davidson was equally powerful.

There is some interesting informatios concerning the road worthiness of 1920 model of Scout motorcycle. The motorcycle racer Burt Munro set out to make a world record in speed on land with a Scout between 1962 and 1967. He succeeded in making an unbeatable record with under-1000cc. The remarlable part was when Munro made the record he was 68 years old riding a 47 years old motorcycle. There were some more examples and everything taken together was made into a movie named World's Fastest Indian in 2005.

The company Indian Motorcycles witnessed a series of problems and was ultimately declared bankrupt in 1977. In 1935 controlling interest of Indian Motorcycles was sold and by 1946 it stopped manufacturing any motorcycle. After that till 1977 it changed hands several times. Through out 1980s and1990s the company was fighting court battles over the ownership of the brand name.

The claim of ownership came through in 1988 when IMCOA Licensing America won the trademark by the Federal court in Denver. A nine company multinational was set up to form Indian Motorcycle Company of America. From 1999 the manufacturing of Scout Motorcycles were started and carried on till 2003 when the company again had to declare bankruptcy.

In 2006, the company re-formed and set up shop in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Though the Chief model is being reconstructed, the Indian Scout motorcycle is no longer made.

Then in 1769, a man with the name of Nicholas Cugnot designed and developed a carriage that was powered by steam. This carriage really did work and it went at six miles per hour. A break through in hybrid car design finally came when Robert Anderson developed an electrically powered car in 1839. It was the first of its breed and was built in Scotland.

This type of electric car was a highly applauded innovation of its time. But, the only problem was that it was extremely hard to replenish the car's battery. Some pioneers did come after Anderson, but they had the same problem of getting the battery recharged easily.

Then there was another outstanding break-through, in the year 1898, Porsche brought out an electric and fuel combo combustion engine that was the first of its kind. The car was called the Lohner Electric Chaise and it could go for up to 40 miles using only its batteries.

Within a short space of time, pioneers combined both gas and a battery powered engines to power what would become today's hybrid vehicle. In 1999, Honda made its jump into the US market. It came out with the Honda Insight, which was a lightweight two-door hybrid. Since then, hybrid cars have been evolving and improving into what we see on the market today. Hybrid cars are no longer just for the techies who think it's cool to combine battery and fuel power to get them where they want to go. Hybrid cars started out simple, and they are still quite simple today.

These days hybrid cars are becoming more and more popular as people understand them better. In the 21st century, hybrids saw a boom in sales when the Toyota Prius came out on the streets. It was the first hybrid with four doors that was marketed in the USA.
