So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Emergency Kits For Rural Locations and Major Catastrophes

By Shine Milby

Survival kits are typically put together for times when there will be no accessible professional medical services, ranging from several days or even months. This type of kit usually includes a suitable first aid kit, products like water and food or drinking water purification tablets , clothing and equipment to safeguard against exposure to adverse weather factors.

In remote areas, professionals in resource extraction industries like oil exploration or logging may put together emergency kits for more than a day's travel time away from the nearest town or urban area. While they often have kits carried in vehicles, sometimes a survival kit must fit within a rucksack in order to be present at rough terrain job sites accessible only by foot or helicopters. Some others, including average individuals, keep survival kits at home to stay prepared for major disasters.

Some others, including average individuals, keep survival kits at home to stay prepared for major natural disasters. In the past number of years the world has experienced events like Hurricane Katrina in the US, the Boxing Day Indonesian quake and Indian Ocean tsunami, and Japan's recent quake and tsunami. These disasters have knocked out private hospitals and disrupted emergency services, utilities, and food delivery services all over entire regions for several weeks .There are even individuals and groups who keep survival kits at home in case of a massive "black swan" event.

One such scenario is a solar flare similar in magnitude to that of the October 1859 super solar storm. That event burned out telegraph networks in North America. If such an electromagnetic storm were to happen these days, electrical grids across a hemisphere could require several months or maybe years to repair. Emergency kits put together for coping with this and other probable long-term interruptions of health services often include both a comprehensive emergency first aid kit as well as a stockpile of medical supplies and medicines.

Survival kits can also be customized to potential local catastrophes or frequent environmental threats. People living near volcanoes often keep N95 respirator masks in their kits to safeguard against breathing silicate volcanic ash. A survival kit might also include an emergency first aid kit with medicines to treat or alleviate suffering from the bites of bugs that are common to the area. Preparing a emergency kit is a matter of specific choice based on the perceived needs. Professionals working in remote areas will have a kit as a matter of sensible precaution. Individuals at home will need to look at the likelihood of a major natural disaster to determine if they should have an emergency survival kit and what that kit should consist of.
