Since the early days of the comic, the Green Lantern costume has known some extreme changes leading into the current day movie version of the story. It's these adjustments that have really helped to take the action hero from being a comic book personality to being a superhero that many of us can relate with in a modern way. Alan Scott who was the very first Lantern within the comics possessed one of the more fascinating outfits of the Lanterns.
His costume was back then one of the more basic of the suits that would be known all throughout the world. A puffy red top with the green lantern emblem placed in the middle of a yellow circle made up the top half while black pants and black boots made up the lower half. There were also the gloves that had a black appearance to them, as did the mask and finally the cape. The cape was a black cape with a lining that was lime colored. This led to a lot of fans confused completely about the green lantern name, as most of the costume was black with a lot of red in it.
Next Hal Jordan stepped into the role and with that, brought a new form to the character and made it his own. There was a unified theme of black and green that was spread all throughout the costume. This was done in an attempt to bring in a lot of the fans that had been lost with the introduction of the Alan Scott version.
The gloves being black to match the rest of the black on the costume allowed fans to see the character as more of a super hero and less than that of a cartoon character. This was one of the biggest concerns that the comic book community had and expressed. It would not be until Guy Gardner that the suit would see more changes.
When Guy Gardner stepped into the role, there were a lot of changes that the character saw. One of these was the off white gloves that the new version had. This was seen by many fans as an improvement and allowed for the character to be more acceptable. Another change was that the suit was more futuristic and as a result has a lot more of an appearance than in previous versions.
Kyle Rayner would become the last and most current version of the super hero. There is an entire black and green theme going. The new version tends to rock out the new costume quite well. Many of the people that have went to see the movie will tell you that the movie version is one of the best yet.
