So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Be Safe And Use Friendly Alternative Heating Sources

By Salley Shehata

As summer ends, it will be time for you to think about what you should do for heating during the winter months and how you should go about it. Heating your house using an alternate method is better because of the rising costs of heating oil. Alternative methods, while cheaper, occasionally, are at more of a risk for starting fires. Keeping your house safe when using alternative heating sources is the subject of this article.

The very first thing many people do is usually to go out and get an electric heater or even an electric fireplace. If not properly looked after, electric fireplaces and space heaters can create a very real fire risk. When you're not home, it is essential to know that you should shut off any of these units. It is a huge fire danger having these ordinarily safe units running while you are not at your house. When they are running it's also wise to never set any objects near the devices. Any wall or item that is flammable must be at least 3 feet away from the unit. Finally, you should not plug this unit into a power strip.

Of course many other people end up getting themselves a wood fire stove or a fireplace. While this is a great way to heat your home, this can also be a fire hazard. The first thing you should realize is that even if you feel you could put the stove in yourself, you should always hire professionals to install it for you. This way you will be absolutely sure that it is installed properly and this little fact itself will help reduce the risk of fires.

Washing the chimney and wood stove regularly is vital to keep yourself safe once the unit is properly put in place. Creosote is considered the major reason why chimney fires happen and it builds up over time in the chimney and stove. An additional idea to know is inserting a barrier made of metal or glass in front of the wood stove or fireplace. Flammable components or carpeting that is near won't have a chance to spark if sparks land on it because of the barrier. If you're not at your home, it is a good idea to shut the wood stove or fireplace off.

Lastly, being sure that every room has a smoke detector is critical. While this is not generally required by legal requirements, this is an excellent way to help make sure your family is notified if there is a fire. You should also be certain you have a fully charged fire extinguisher accessible on every level of your home. Even though the guidelines above should help reduce chances of a fire, incidents still happen and it is better to be prepared.
