So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Unbeatable Street Eats in Turkey and Greece

If you've managed to snap up some fantastic hotel deals it would be counter-intuitive to splurge your savings on over-priced restaurants and cafes. Instead do your research beforehand and make sure that you head out to the venues that all the locals are talking about. These are more likely to be vans, carts, barrows and hole-in-the-wall restaurants, thanks to the street food phenomenon which has taken over our towns and cities.

Turkey is the place to go for excellent, affordable street food. Everyone will recognise the iconic doner kebab, which is served up throughout the world. However, to try it in its best incarnation you'll need to head to Istanbul. Whilst there why not devour some other famous street food. Specialities include the bagel-like snack simit, giant jacket potatoes with a range of exotic fillings, known as kumpir and balik ekmek, a grilled fish sandwich.

Kokorec, a sausage made from offal and encased in lamb's intestine, is perhaps a dish reserved for the more adventurous eater. It might not sound particularly tasting, but once eaten the taste is never forgotten. If you'd prefer to play it safe then you can't go wrong with gozleme. These spinach and feta filled delicacies are somewhere between a pizza and a pancake and an ideal snack for the vegetarian visitor. There are also chocolate-filled varieties available for those with a sweet tooth.

For some of the best street food available in Greece, head to the Monastiraki area of Athens, where tourists flock towards the Parthenon and vendors sell souvenirs, T-shirts, replica vases - and a seemingly limitless array of delicious things to eat. Sweet chestnuts are a favourite, as is roast corn on the cob, seasoned with local sea salt. Souvlaki, or kebabs, are perfect to eat on the go, being served on a skewer, so you won't even get greasy fingers.

A sweet doughnut-like pastry ring filled with apple or chocolate is the perfect way to end your meal. Pair this with a cup of foamy orchid tea. If tea and cakes, makes you hanker for a taste of home, Greece now boasts three McDonalds branches and the burgers taste exactly as they do back home. The only difference is that they are served in pita bread.
