So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Choosing A Counter Surface In The Kitchen

By Paulina Kertz

When you decide to update the look of your kitchen, choosing the proper countertop is one of the most important decisions you will make. You want to select something functional and durable, yet attractive. There are many choices, including the following options.

Countertops made from granite are highly popular and with good reason. The hardness of granite makes it a durable surface that can withstand the heavy use of kitchen countertops, and it is also quite resistant to heat damage. It is found in a huge variety of colors, and if installed and sealed correctly, will last pretty much forever. Knives can scratch granite, however, so you have to be careful not to cut on the surface. Granite is also a fairly expensive choice.

Ceramic tile has been a popular choice for decades and has some key advantages. It is a very inexpensive option and can definitely withstand heat. For example, if you set a hot pan on top of the counter, it won't damage the surface. There are thousands of color choices and sizes, and you can even include custom designs with tile. The disadvantages are that the grout is very difficult to keep clean, and tile can chip and crack easily, and the counter itself will not be even as it is with a smooth surface such as granite.

If you want a warm, inviting look, you might consider installing butcher block countertops. While these do need to be properly treated and oiled occasionally, they can be sanded and then resealed if they become scratched or stained. Stains are common problem with wood countertops, so you will want to clean up spills quickly. Butcher block also can be used for just one portion of your kitchen, such as the island counter area.

If you love that really modern look, consider having stainless steel counters placed in your kitchen. They are expensive and can dent and become scratched, but they withstand heat and are otherwise very durable. They are also seamless and very easy to clean in general.

If cost is a big issue, you can consider opting for some type of laminate countertop. These are available in a wide variety of colors and are also very inexpensive to install. They are also easy to clean and are fairly durable. If they become scratched, however, it is pretty much impossible to repair the damage, and they lack the upscale look of the aforementioned materials.
