So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

The Use Of Charred Oak Barrels At Home

By Chloe Gib

Charred oak barrels have made their way through history and retain popularity. In the past, some people thought these barrels could benefit patients with lung issues. Today, these containers are used for their primary purpose, which is aging spirits, as well as unconventional uses at barbecues.

These types of storage containers go back to another time, both medicinally and as a flavor additive for different alcoholic beverages. Medicinal folklore recommended those patients with lung distress to inhale the fumes from the containers containing apple brandy. This often became a strategy for those seeking relief from various lung ailments before the advent of modern medicine.

The vessels also were used as a way to age favorite spirits when it came to any alcoholic beverage that could benefit from aging, such as wine or bourbon. Leaving the liquid to be stored in the barrel for a period would draw out the flavor of a medium charred interior in reaction to the alcohol. The result was a satisfying, distinctive flavor that added depth and complexity to basic drinks.

You may decide after using the container for aging that the effect becomes diminished on alcohol over time. There are professional services that can char the interior of the wine barrel again to restore the flavor potential. You may want to take advantage of this type of service since the container itself needs to be taken apart to an extent as part of the process.

You can use these oak barrels for different things. If you want to add to a flavorful barbecue, you can add the interior bits of such a unit on top of briquettes, if you have a barrel that is of no longer use to you. The overall smoke will flavor the grill for a different taste that could be appealing to your guests.

Many vendors sell these types of containers for home use. You may want them for storing spirits or for decorative purposes. The containers typically are handmade without any wax or chemicals in the products in case you want to use them as they were used in history for aging spirits.

Vendors online can connect you with the latest lines of charred oak barrels. You may want to make comparisons of the prices put on new versions, and look at ones that are used. You may be able to find versions to use at online auction sites, or through sales locally. Careful exploration can put you on the path to the perfect barrel for home use.
