So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Handmade decorative vases

By Tobi Bolanle

Whether you prefer fresh flowers to artificial ones, or vice-versa, one thing is clear: stylish vases are needed to display them in the best possible way in your home. But with decorative vases available in a vast array of colours, shapes and sizes, you may have a few questions about finding the right one. This time, rather than opting for a run-of-the-mill factory made vase, why not go for a handmade piece with a story, which will not only enhance your love of the piece but also your connection with the maker of the work?

To get the most out of any flower arrangement, think carefully about what you plan on displaying before you buy the perfect vase. Longer flowers tend to look awkward in shorter vases, and top-heavy flowers tend to look disproportionate in slim vases. Start simple: if you are unsure as to which shape and size you like prefer, go for a stylishly simple bud vase or bottle vase. Designed to hold a single flower such as a rose, tulip or daisy, these are most commonly clear, and quite often come in the shape of a narrow cylinder. Bottle vases are also often used as wedding vases. On the other hand, when it comes to larger, heavier and more elaborate floral arrangements, you should look for vases which are tall and thick. Solid glass vessels are a good idea, as well as large chunky pottery or ceramics.

If your home is looking a bit empty then why not make the most of this with elegant floor vases. Add interest to a bland and empty corner by dressing it with a floor vase filled with sunflowers or fresh, colourful gladioli. To avoid family or guests tipping it over your floor vases, make sure you weigh them down with rice or sand. And, finally, there are vases that look good even without flowers. Why not use a large handmade ceramic vase Add personality to a nook or windowsill with a large handmade ceramic vase. Or why not have it as an all year-round centrepiece? Whether full or empty, you can be sure that it will make a big statement.

Fresh cut flowers are always a popular gift, whether it be for Valentine's Day or Mother's Day. They look beautiful, smell lovely and can brighten up any room. This year, why not go that extra mile and give the special person in your life a vase to go with the flowers you have bought them? Decorative vases also make ideal gifts for the home lover. However, make sure you think about their personal taste and try to visualise the item in their home. Will it fit and will it match their colour scheme? Decorative gifts such as pottery or ceramics make beautiful presents - gifts that will definitely last a lifetime.

Whichever vase you do decide to go for, you can be certain that they are a stunning, yet simple way, to bring a breath of fresh air into your home all year round.
