There are lot of schools that offer good standards when it comes to sailing that are good for sailors. The moment you select a sailing school to invest into, be certain that they offer a good standard of courses. There are a total of five levels that are used for practical courses:
Go Start Yachting This is the part that introduces the course to the sailors. This part of the course will give instructions of the basics of sailing, skills necessary and the yacht itself. This will also introduce the yacht and its parts and the steering process. Usually this will take a couple of days after which you will move on to the next level.
Competent Crew Course The total number of days for this course is five days and is complete. It is the course that novices can start with especially if the experience is limited and wants to gain knowledge fast. This practical course has a lot of aspects and would be interesting. Usage of sail, mooring skills and rope work will be discussed here on top of the basics. A complete explanation about the yacht will also be given.
Day Skipper Course The previous course must be finished before you can take this course and you must have passed the required exam for you to be eligible to pass this course. In this course, which takes approximately five days, the student will be driving the yacht and will need his skills and understanding of maintenance and maintaining safety of the yacht.
Courses for Coastal Skipper Weekends may be enough for the other courses mentioned above to be finished, but for this course, it must be five continuous days. This one takes a more rigid training and introduces the student to overnight sailing. This course is designed for coastal areas that are confined and takes on all the skills in the other courses.
Once this course is completed the student can take the RYA/MCA exam which will gain him or her the Certificate of Competence.
Offshore Yachtmaster The Yachtmaster Offshore exam is the one that most people wants to attain and is only good for people with lots of experience. As one of the requirements of this exam, the student must have been able to drive the yacht for 50 days including five 60 nautical miles of journey in the sea.
