So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

A Guide For Purchasing Quilting Supplies In Port Arthur TX

By Nora Jennings

A quilt is a specific type of blanket that traditionally consists of three layers of fabric. Some historians believe the art of sewing these decorative bed coverings dates back to the ancient Egyptians. The activity was popular in the United States during the Colonial period but only the wealthy had enough leisure time to participate. Modern day quilters who use this sewing method to create colorful comforters, clothing, and wall hangings have a need for quilting supplies in Port Arthur TX.

Beginning quilters often find the vast amount of notions and supplies available to be overwhelming. Anyone who wants to learn how to quilt needs to know which items are mandatory to get started. Experienced quilters can add optional notions and tools to their basic sewing kit over time.

Cutting patterns, trim, and fabrics requires a minimum of two pairs of scissors. One pair of scissors should be dedicated to cutting fabric only so the blades are always sharp. Keep a second pair of scissors handy for cutting paper patterns and other types of material.

Most beginning quilters will find that a seam ripper is extremely handy. This convenient little tool features a forked head with a razor sharp blade that slices through thread quickly and easily. The initial learning process will often require the quilter to removed stitched seams to start over again.

Quilters will use lots of pins to hold pieces of fabric in place while sewing stitches. A pin cushion not only organizes pins by keeping them all in one place but the wool roving inside the cushion prevents pins from rusting. Abrasive material inside the small ball hanging off the top keeps pins sharp and clean. Quilters should avoid using dull pins, which can leave big holes in the fabric and ruin the aesthetics of the finished piece.

Basting pins are similar to safety pins but are curved. This shape is effective for penetrating multiple fabric layers without shifting. These pins are helpful whether pin or spray basting.

Marking tools come in a variety of styles and colors. They eliminate the need to eyeball how the pieces go together and improve neatness and accuracy. Water soluble markers are typically blue or white and the temporary ink washes away with water. Chalk is preferable for markings that do not need to last and can be washed or brushed off the fabric. Chalk transfer paper allows the user to transfer any design using a dull pencil or ballpoint pen. Air soluble markers use an ink that disappears over time.

Quilters need a good iron to press fabrics while working on a project. An iron that is 1500 watts or higher is a good choice for this type of crafting. Other helpful features include steam and no steam options and an automatic shut off mechanism for safety. Adding spray starch to the fabric before pressing can improve accuracy when cutting and piecing fabrics together.

Quilters should also purchase a tabletop or freestanding ironing board. These items provide a flat surface for pressing the wrinkles out of fabric. With these basic sewing notions, anyone can start learning how to create colorful quilts.
