So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas

The History of Kina Lillet

By Mark Hazard

Kina Lillet was a drink that gained popularity in the 1950s when James Bond came into existence. The writer who introduced James Bond, Ian Fleming, concocted a drink for Bond called the Vesper. The drink contained Kina Lillet, which was an alcohol based drink that was typically consumed as an aperitif and tonic containing wine, quinine and a mix of fruit liqueurs.

Ian Fleming had doubtless come across Kina Lillet while on one of his pre-war betting journeys to Normandy, a drink had a sour taste from the incorporation of quinine, that has the effects of a muscle relaxant and used in the handling of malaria. Quinine is made from the bark of the South American cinchona tree or the kina kina, which accounts for the sour taste.

Kina Lillet was first launched in 1895 and soon became popular in France. Over time the precedence of the word "Kina" - indicating the presence of quinine - was continuously reduced in advertising and by the 1930s the name had been shortened simply to "Lillet". A last name change happened when a red variety was introduced - Lillet Rouge - when the first Kina Lillet was named Lillet Blanc.

The company that started to make this drink in an area of France called the Bordeaux region still makes it today. Nonetheless the company modified ownership 1st in 1985, when it was sold to a Bordeaux wine seller who modernized production and reformulated the product and more recently by Pernod-Ricard.

Today all true fans of 007 wish to find the drink their hero consumes, the Vesper, and its resurrection has caused a burst of activity for fans looking for Kina Lillet. Though not actually the same drink as it was once - the quinine has been reduced - nevertheless minus the sour taste it has again regained popularity.

When looking for the product preferred by 007, you might find it is a little difficult to track down, but as it is not well stocked one of the simplest ways to get your hands on a bottle is to buy on the internet.

Quantum of Solace, the newest James Bond film, has had the consequences of re-igniting demand for the drink. If you can track it down pour 3 measures of Gordon's gin, one of vodka and 1/2 Kina Lillet, shake till ice cold and serve with a piece of lemon peel in a martini glass - settle down with a James Bond motion picture and discover why your favorite secret agent likes Kina Lillet.
