So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

The Rich And Interesting History Of Jewelry

By Shelly Murdock

There has been mis-interpretation of the Magnificence and diversity of jewelry in the past years. Different cultures and religions have different uses and beliefs about these beautiful precious stones. Social class and pride also play a big role in the understanding of these fascinating and desirable objects.

They vary according to their shapes, color, structure and texture. The ones which are well known include the likes of gold, silver, diamonds, bronze and copper. There are also others which many people are not familiar with. They include ruby, quartz, jasper, jade and many more. Some cultures believe that some of the stones have magical powers.

Ancient humans who lived in the area that covers modern day Kenya were the first to embrace the use of jewelry whereby they used to wear animal teeth, egg shells, beads, bones, and claws around their neck. The Cro-Magnon also used to wear beads around their ankles, wrist and neck. In some communities like the Maasai of Kenya, wearing of some jewels symbolized passage to adulthood whereby after circumcision one was to kill a lion and use one of its teeth on a ceremonial necklace. They were also commonly used for body modifications in acts like lip plates placement.

In the modern society, the precious stones are being used differently compared to the old age. Today; gold, diamonds and silver are used to signify social class and also as a means of wealth storage. Women and also men decorate their bodies by piercing rings of different metal types. Currently gold is the most valuable stone which has made it very hard to buy. This has seen other metals such as copper being coated with gold to increase affordability. In some religions, it is a must for couples to wear rings on their fingers as a sign of union.

Artists have taken the advantage and started curving jewelry into different designs hence making huge profits by selling their designs. The art of jewel design has however been there even in the ancient times an act that was performed by goldsmiths. They curved metals into different designs and symbols which at times symbolized the beliefs of different cultures.

Doctors have advised that wearing of jewels is not healthy as they bring about skin related diseases such as cancer and also periodontal which are caused by mouth and tongue piercing. These warnings have fell to deaf ears since there has been an increase in body decorations through piercing over the past five years. It is recommended to see a well trained person this procedures.

Many are times when the beauty of jewels is overlooked. These precious stones do not only have great monetary value but they also have deep cultural history since they go way back. Currently the United States has the largest jewelry market share of about 40%. In most cases the beauty of these ornaments is measured according to monetary value. Jewels have rich historical back-ground and also deep cultural values which are not taken into consideration
