So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Ways To Help You Improve Your Cooking

By Sarah Foster

It is important to be always learning new cooking skills, even if you're just cooking for family. You can transform an unremarkable meal into a memorable feast if you learn and practice the right techniques and recipes. Get together a repertoire of your favorite tips and you'll be a huge success in the kitchen.

Fix the crust on your pie. Cracks will appear if you overwork your dough. Try placing some cold water within the cracks and using your fingers to gently rub the affected area. If the top crust of your pie has cracks, brush a thin layer of milk on the entire thing, and sprinkle some sugar on it. Once baked, your crust will have developed a golden brown glaze that disguises any cracks.

The quality of vegetables improves when cooked. Slow cooking, and overcooking, vegetables will destroy their nutritional content and flavor. A plus is that faster cooking methods usually yield vegetables which are, generally speaking, simply better for your health.

Spices and herbs should be stored in a dark and cool area. Many factors can cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor, especially humidity and light. You can plan on ground herbs and spices retaining their potency for a year. Whole spices may retain flavor for up to five years. Proper storage is essential to maintaining fresh, robust flavors.

When you want to chop herbs, sprinkle some salt on your cutting board. The salt will give the herbs more flavor and prevent them from sliding of the board as you cut. Don't put too much salt on the board, though. Don't add salt later, either, as there should be enough absorbed when you are chopping. That salt on the board adds some flavor since it sticks to the herbs.

You should let your cooking wait until all the necessary preparations are complete. This allows you to economize on the amount of gas or electricity used when cooking, and keeps you from becoming distracted and accidentally getting injured by something like hot oil splashing out of a pan.

As you cook, try to wash your dishes along the way. Have your sink full of soapy, hot water one side, and use the other side to rinse. It's easier to wash cooking utensils right after their use.

Think of these ideas as as a starting point, and come up with your own culinary miracles. The cooking tips above provide ideas about how you can improve your cooking skills and make more delicious meals for your friends and family.
