So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

For Production Of Grass Fed Beef California Leads The Way

By Casandra Newton

Cattle were born to roam and graze sunny, open fields, not spend their lives on feed lots and in barns fattened by grain diets of corn and soy. Factory farmers figured out that production time and effort was greatly reduced feeding their livestock grain and kept sedentary rather than putting them out to pasture. The biggest sacrifice is that the quality of beef degrades as does the health profile. Home to conscientious family farms, in grass fed beef California reigns supreme.

With their four-chambered stomachs, a cow's ideal diet consists of fibrous, enzyme-rich grasses and small plants as found in the wild. Natural foods are easier for the body to digest and make the perfect fuel, containing the correct balance of fats and nutrients for optimal operation and development of the cows. The outcome is higher quality beef with a far more complex nutritional profile.

While grass fed beef generally has less fat as grain lot stored cattle, the fat is richer in color due to higher amounts of beta carotene within the diet that ends up in the meat. It has a much higher content of Vitamin E and also up to sixty percent more Omega 3 fatty acids, the type of fat found in fish and walnuts and flax seed. Highly nutritious for the body, CLA is almost non-existent is grain fed cows.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid is useful to the body in building lean muscle, reducing body fat, and very helpful for the immune system and heart as well. Cows raised in sunshine grazing grasses produce it in large quantities in their bodies. Cows are rotated in fields for a broad diet, and cover crops feed them when grass is not plentiful, so their meat is higher in vitamins like folic acid.

An outstanding benefit of cattle foraging in open fields is the holistic relationship forged by reducing use of fossil fuels. Cattle fed grain are the end product of energy consumption used in producing their feed, from planting and harvesting, storage and transportation to irrigation. They are also laden with poisons like herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers.

Allowed to graze, cows spend their lives in an open field. While they may be given water if no open sources are nearby, they are generally self-sustaining requiring no heavy farming equipment, use of fuel, or chemicals in large fields. Choosing grass fed beef is comparable to eating meat raised on solar power, with benefits reaching beyond health for our bodies and environment.

The initial investment in choosing grass fed beef over traditional grain fed varieties is higher, as production takes longer and is not dependent upon chemicals and medications to fatten cows quickly and turn them to market. The overall outcome, however, is worth the investment in long-term health and higher-density nutritional profile of the meat.

When shopping for your next meal, consider the lives of these cows and what goes into producing your beef. You can choose grain fed cows that stood around their whole lives or happy cattle that ran around in fields eating what was intended. The obvious choice when it relates to your health is grass fed varieties. For production of grass fed beef California leads the way in a growing industry of health.
