So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Silk Ribbon Embroidery For The Beginner

By Elena McDowell

Silk ribbon embroidery may be considered too difficult to try by those looking at the intricacy of the floral motifs and decorative patterns. However, even a beginner can easily master a couple of basic stitches and by combining them produce pleasing results. This antique art has a romantic quality that appeals to many. Of course, like any other form of sewing, perfection comes with practice.

Many kits are available from online stores that include the materials needed to begin a project. If you are beginner, taking advantage of one of these offers may be the easiest way to start. All the difficult decisions about colors, sizes of ribbons and needles are already made for you. You will also receive fabric with a design already printed on it and instructions are usually given on exactly how to proceed.

Just about any kind of fabric is suitable for this type of embroidery, however if a very dense fabric is used, the needle may be too difficult to push through. Knits may require interfacing on the wrong side to make them more stable as they are so stretchy. Even greeting cards may be decorated in this manner. Many items such as pillow cases, sheets, clothing and even hats are given a special touch.

The right type of needles must be used as a large eye is important. This makes a big enough hole in fabric for ribbons to pass through easily. The point must also be sharp enough to pierce ribbons without splitting them.

Most people prefer to work using a hoop as this keeps the fabric taut, making it easier to stitch. It is preferable to use proper silk for ribbons. Ribbons come in an amazing variety of colors and shades. The most commonly used width is 4mm or 7mm, although wider sizes are beginning to become more popular.

Online websites provide much information for beginners. There are many videos giving detailed instructions on everything related to this art. Tutorials on how to do basic stitches provide illustrations and step by step instructions. Many useful tips can be picked up from blogs written by experienced embroiderers.

Five basic stitches - the straight stitch, ribbon stitch, the lazy daisy stitch, the French knot and stem stitch - may be used in many different combinations. With step by step instructions and illustrations to follow, it is easy to understand exactly how to make these stitches and what they are used for. Some are used to create leaves and petals while others are suitable for outlining and creating flower stems.

An important tip to remember is that tension is very important when creating stitches. Pulling a stitch too tightly can ruin its effect. The proper tension creates more dimension.

Silk ribbon embroidery is one of the most stunning techniques. It results in antique looking, three dimensional designs. It does take practice and patience to become proficient. However, it is definitely worth persevering until you are pleased with your results.
