This is such a great little device! I remember my grandmother always holding up this little fan to her face when she was hot. I am very pleased with this product and the customer service is remarkable. My first fan hiccupped and was rather loud. It's just really a swamp cooling that is made into a handheld unit. Works well when it's dry and hot enough, from common sense, this thing shouldn't work well in humid areas. From now on, I will hesitate on believing Amazon reviews because either the company is making fake reviews or they simply only post positive reviews. To elaborate: You have two options when using this fan; you can plug it in to a USB port on your pc or use batteries. It comes with a tiny bottle to keep water. Use this on the go to refresh the sponge. Its cooling method is very unique and it almost feels like it has an 'air conditioning' effect. We love it and would recommend that you purchase this model if you are looking for compact and unique fan that takes up very little space. The extra weight of the batteries are not great for hiking but the comfort at night pays off the hard work. I keep it running on mid power and it runs for a good 8 hours.
After using it for a week, the device seems to get louder, it makes these grumbling noises as if the motor is slowing down then picking up pace. I really don't think the motor is going to last more than a year. Apparently most of his colleagues got one too. Doesn't surprise me when you are stuck in such confined spaces plus requiring plenty of physical effort. It's not the normal fan you see, it runs on a centrifugal turbine like a blower system and reduces the air temperature by using cooling to cool down the air. You pour half a bottle of water (dedicated water bottle that it provides) and it does the magic itself.
I used to carry a little paper hand fan but I've been embarrassed with it a couple of times by my buddies calling me a 'fag'! This cooler is NOT much more masculine, but I prefer to use one on these. It sounds good but how anyone can give this product higher than one star is beyond me. It has minimal cooling and air circulating capability. To feel anything at all, you have to hold it less than a foot away and on bare skin.
It hasn't been hot enough (until now - late April 2011) to use it. We opened it up and it worked well - for one day.
I ordered this product because I am undergoing chemotherapy and my temperatures get to very high levels sometimes, it helps a lot, I just place it next to me and it cools me down almost immediately. I must say I'm extremely delighted with the item. You can easily put handfuls of ice in the tank however I found it really wasnt necessary. QUIETEST AIR CONDITIONER. When I first obtained this fan, the box had no screws inside. Other features appear to be working "OK" so far. What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need.
