So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

How to Implement Traditional Furnishings into a Contemporary Style

By Tim Smith

A contemporary, modern theme can instantly turn a room into an elegant, sophisticated and even futuristic design. However exactly what furnishings and decor is regarded as contemporary can differ from person-to-person.

Key features of the modernism era embody a style which is both minimalist and practical. Most designers will tell you to keep to neutral, pale colours which give the allusion of more space. When it comes to modern furniture then, you will often see a drastic change from traditional, historic furniture, to items which again focus on a functional yet practical design.

More recently however what defines a contemporary design depends more on personal tastes, with many homes successfully implementing both modern and traditional pieces in a room to create a minimalist, yet comfortable style.

The use of wood in a contemporary home

Using traditional materials such as wood can in fact compliment a contemporary design. Pine wood in particular is renowned for its diversity, enabling it to compliment almost any interior style.

While pine can compliment a contemporary home, it can however be easy to get wrong, and some may find pine furniture can make rooms look somewhat dated, especially if you have older appliances or furniture surrounding it. However there are a few techniques which people have used over the years to incorporate pinewood:

* A little bit of paint can in fact go along way. Using bold, bright colours on existing pine cabinets and furnishings can create a daring contrast with new modern pieces, creating a stylish, unique design. Alternatively using a metallic or textured coating can compliment modern furnishings.

* Appliances and accessories which are noticeably dated can have a major affect on how pine furniture looks in a room. By switching to new appliances and minimalist accessories will give your pine furniture a fresh, new appearance.

* When buying pine furniture for a contemporary home, look out for items which use a brushed metal or steel hardware as this will emphasise a sleek design. However if you are looking to maintain some character and contrast, a distressed copper will prevent your home from looking overly contemporary and sterile.
