Nearly 600,000 Honda Accord vehicles in the U.S. and Canada are impacted in an expanded recall effort, states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A worsening power steering fluid hose is the culprit in the effort. It could leak and cause an engine fire.
Honda Accord recall begins through engine fire
The recall involves all Accord vehicles from model years 2003 to 2007. The vehicles with a V8 engine will be incorporated. No other engines are impacted.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the power steering hose and connectors on the Accord vehicles may be deteriorated from prolonged exposure to motor heat. They may now be to a point where a leak could develop. Power steering fluid leaked onto a hot motor can lead to a fire inside the engine compartment.
There were no accidents or injuries reported because of the issue, though there was one incident of engine fire reported.
Recall could not start
Owners can be ready to have their vehicles checked and hoses exchanged for free, but it may not take place in the next month or two. The hoses needed to replace the part are out of production, so Honda will need to re-manufacture the hoses. That could take quite a while.
Ed Miller, a spokesman for the Japanese car maker, said Monday:
"We're going to start making them and getting them out there as soon as we can."
Miller advised all owners to be familiar with a potential leak and to get it checked out if they are worried.

The Honda Accord is very reliable and well-known for that. That is why it is second only to the Toyota Camry in sales. In 2011, however, the car maker had more recalls than any other manufacturer, which is a bad sign.
This recall is really an expansion of an earlier recall of 2007 and 2008 model year Acura TLs. Honda recalled 52,615 of those before expanding it to other Accords. The 2012 top nation's recall list may contain Honda again this year after the recall was expanded.
