So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

The Fashion Turban Makes A Comeback

By Claudine MacDonald

Turbans have been around for centuries and are worn for many reasons. Their influence on Western fashions only began when trade with India opened up. It was not long before eastern influences began to be reflected in many different ways, including in what women were wearing. Over the years, a fashion turban has become an expression of exotic elegance for many women. They go in and out of fashion but at the moment they are making a huge comeback.

As trade between the east and the west increased, the styles at the time were inspired by these new influences. Turbans became popular and took on many shapes and forms that blended with the head coverings already being used and responded to changing hairstyles. Early ones were ornately decorated with ostrich plumes. They were also adorned with fringes, tassels, pearls and other jewels. As the regency era wore on they became more and more outrageous.

It was Paul Poiret, the French designer, who put turbans firmly on the map early in the 20th century. He was influenced by oriental styles to create a completely new shape for women. He was completely against the wearing of corsets and petticoats. He was in love with turbans and used them as accessories for many of his outfits.

Back in the golden age of Hollywood, the turban was a staple in the wardrobe of many stars. Swedish film star Greta Garbo was a fan. Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly wore them with a regal air, pairing them with lavish ball gowns. Sophia Loren made them look sexy and stylish. Barbra Streisand wore hers in many different ways. Even Queen Elizabeth was seen wearing one when she toured the Western Isles.

Turbans may have cycled in and out of fashion over the years but recently they have made a great comeback. Models are strutting runways in designer turbans. Kate Moss has been given the credit for popularizing the look. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen twins and Jennifer Lopez have all been seen wearing these accessories in their own unique way.

The turbans that are available today come in many different shapes, colors and fabrics. The colors vary from classic black and white to those which are more funky and fun. There is a style to suit everyone, from those who enjoy a more classic look to those who prefer something bolder which draws attention.

It is possible to wrap one yourself using one of your own vintage silk scarves. Another easy solution is to order one online. There are an extensive variety available for purchase and an online search makes it possible to compare styles and prices.

You may have never worn a fashion turban before and may not be sure if it will suit you. The only way to find it is to try one. They are very versatile so you should be able to find one to suit your particular style. You may just discover a new way to express your individuality. If you want to learn how to tie one yourself, there are many instructional videos available online.
