So This Is Christmas

Merry Christmas is such an infectious feeling I like to feel that way all year around.

So if you are visiting just before Christmas, just after Christmas or even here on Christmas day I am sure you will find something of interest for you and in the spirit of Christmas.

It may be said that Christmas is no longer a celebration but this must be spoken by people that have never had trouble closing their eyes on Christmas Eve in an expectation of what maybe left for them on the carpet under the tree.

I continue to look forward to the surprise on my Grandchild's faces to this day at Christmas events.

Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas - Merry Christmas

How Reclaimed Refrigerant Is Handled Today

By Lucille Lamb

In 1987, the days of releasing chemicals that allowed refrigeration units to get cold into the atmosphere came to an end with the Montreal Protocol in Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This protocol became the most accepted treaty among countries in the United Nations history. Chlorofluorocarbons and other chlorinated hydrocarbons production was set to stop by 2030 and those chemicals in use had to be retained when equipment needed to be repaired or replaced. This action started a small industry that focused on reclaimed refrigerant. There are several ways this process is performed to ensure the chemicals are contained and not released.

The reaction to the Montreal Protocol was quick. Companies stated to manufacture equipment a repair specialist could use to handle the potentially harmful liquids and gases. Among the items necessary to have were specialized pumps, gauges, manifolds, scales, hoses, and storage cylinders. This pieces made it possible to withdraw and store the material.

The removal equipment can utilize various methods to withdraw the liquid or gas. The methods are the Liquid Pull, Liquid Vapor, and Push Pull. One should make sure they are using the right method for the job they are doing. These techniques are not interchangeable, and one should be careful when making their choice.

The Push Pull method should only be done after one has determined a number of things. There should be no more than ten pounds of refrigerant in the HVAC unit. The machine should not use a heat pump, reversing valve or an accumulator. The system should not allow liquid chemicals to form into solids.

The most used method of extracting substances from machinery is the Liquid Vapor technique. The turns the liquids inside the machine into gases or vapors. The vapors are then removed and put through specialized pumping unit. The vapors return to liquid form and are stored in propane like cylinders. The last method involves keeping the fluids in their liquid form when extracting and storing the contents from the cooling equipment.

The technician will make an assessment on the chemicals while she is removing them. She will be looking to make sure that there are not any contaminants in the material. The material that has not been contaminated can be stored and reused later in other pieces of equipment. Contaminated chemicals have to be treated differently and are usually sent to a processing facility.

The contaminated material has to be sent to a reclamation center that will dispose of it properly. The disposal process has to meet government regulations on how the material is handled. Essentially, they will either separate the compounds so they can be used again in other applications or they will incinerate all the chemicals until they are eradicated.

People have come to realize that the indiscriminate dumping of chemicals can have an adverse affect on the environment. Treaties like the Montreal Protocol have come about to try and create agreements and legislation to try to stop this type of behavior. Things like controlling the release of reclaimed refrigerant to either reuse it or completely destroy it are becoming the acceptable way to handle dangerous chemicals.
